I was out plowing snow this a.m. and heard a pinging noise (about 4-5 times). Breather pipe smelled like something burning. I shut down tractor. It still runs but am afraid to use it. Any suggestions?

Is your tractor gas or diesel? Where on the engine did the pinging noise come from? Did it seem to be more related directly to crankshaft speed, or at about half crank speed which would suggest a valvetrain problem? A broken rocker arm or severely bent pushrod is going to cause a dead or near-dead miss on the affected cylinder, so if it seems to be hitting on all of them, I wouldn't suspect that right away. I have seen Deeres break the aluminum rocker shaft clamps, which will affect valve operation and result in kind of a whoofing sound at the intake or exhaust. The oil spitting out at the fill doesn't bother me too much, as it's likely the crankshaft slinging oil around in there causing that. I would probably start with a compression check and pulling the valve cover to check valvetrain operation. You might also check the timing, to make sure it didn't jump some. Those are going to be the easiest items to check and should give you some direction to go in. Don't automatically assume the worst. Catastrophic engine failures don't happen that often, and the fact that it is still running makes that less likely than a simpler problem. I'd hate to see you do the previously suggest tear down and find that the problem could have been fixed easily and cheaply. Email me if I can be of any more help.

I ran the tractor today at about 1200 rpms for couple hours plowing snow. It almost sounds like a valve, but not sure. My nephew is a John deere mechanic and seems to think it may have been pieces of the ring. We're gonna do compression check. Also, he says it won't really hurt any thing to keep running it if I'm going to do an overhaul anyway. Tractor has 7800 hrs on it, and has always great!!!! Time for an overhaul? How much$$$ is it gonna cost. Nephew and I will do all the tear down ourselves. Thanks to all who have helped!

You are in for an engine tear down.

sounds like a bent push rod or a broke arm

still runs. It actually sounds ok. But when checking oil, oil spits out of filler cap a bit. Again, it doesn't sound catastrophic. It was like 4-5 sharp quick whistling noises earlier. It also doesn't seem to be smoking or anything. Thanks for any input.

Jeff:

One of the current JD Techs on this board can probably answer this for you, but since it's blowing out of the oil fill, and if it didn't do that before, could it be that the crankcase vent pump went south ?

Might pay to go to the daler and ask the service manager.
