I had moved the right rear tire out to get the reduction gear cover off to install a tranmission in my 720, Well I got it all back together and was out driving it and checking trans for noise and the power sterring out, (with the wheel still out) I happen to look at my right axel and notice some fresh rust marks I stop to check it out and the axel wheel was coming off. it was to the point to where I could see the spocket that moves the hub down the axel,I think if I would not have stopped the tractor I could of had a bad accident. What I did was forget to tighten up the inside wedge around the axel. This is just INFO for us who have a project tractor that is taking some time. Ben

Yes, that can be very dangerous. Several years ago a cousin of mine lost a wheel like that when he was on the road with his IH 560. The tractor went out of control, flipped over and killed him. He left a wife and three young boys.

I was at a JD dealer a few weeks ago when a mechanic took a 4020 for a test drive. He turned
the corner in front of the showroom when the right wheel fell off. When the tractor went down
the wheel fell in breaking the fender off above
the axle.No one was hurt.

Doesn't hurt to check and tighten the wheel clamps periodically on any tractor! Thanks for the heads up!

Been driving my 720, pullin it, workin it, etc., with the wedges loose for over a year. I just wish it would work loose. Hard for me to believe they ever walk off as much trouble as I have had EVER getting one broke loose and moved.

The same kind of thing happened to me with my 47 A. I just bought a house and was moving the tractor down the road about 10 miles when I noticed that the right wheel had moved about 2 inches. I stopped and luckily had my dad behind me with a truck. We jacked the wheel up and since the previous owner already had the wheel slid out a ways the whole thing fell off. Everyone should check those clamps!!

that would have made for a bad accident. I've had those wheels move even with being somewhat tight. I always like to have them in about 5 1/2 " on the shaft for that very reason. I've noticed folks running them at the end of the shaft but would advise against such practice.

We run the centers out far enough the outer sidewall of the tire is even with the axle end. More stable on side hills and less damage if a doorway gets rubbed. Checking the bolt torque with a torque wrench elimnated the walking problem or breaking parts. Learned the hardway myself at a show with the 1st 435. Had it torqued at home but after a trip down the track she loosened up.

G Taylor, I did something very similar with my 435. I had changed the wheel spacing for plowing at a plow day. Tightened the hub bolts good but when driving the 3 miles or so to site I didn't notice it was working its way out till the wheel, hub, etc. came off and passed me. What a surprise. Tried to plow the highway. Fortunately it was the ditch side and no one was hurt except my pride. My suggestion is to always take the bolts out when you move a wheel, CLEAN THREADS GOOD and then reinstall, torqueing properly. Somebody once told me you cannot properly torque a bolt with rusty, dirty threads. Now I am a believer!
