I would really appreciate any input as to how good or bad a model 48 backhoe would be on my Deere 4700 tractor. Is it a serious digger, or a toy? Thanks, Tom

I have a mod. 48 backhoe on a 4700 and can tell you that it is a great little backhoe for it's size. But I have had a problem with the ram that curls the bucket. I have bent 4 of them and was checking out this board to see if anyone else has mentioned the problem. I know from the dealer that I am not alone, just wondering how big a problem it is. I bought the tractor new with the loader and backhoe in 7/00 and JD replaced the cylinder while it was under warrantee, but now I'm on my own.

We have had our 48 backhoe for about 5 years now. This does not mean that it was used continuously. It has been used for 4 to 5 weeks during that time.
So far, the ram that turns the bucket has failed and bent once. Just the other day, the top ram closest to the operator failed, making a 90 degree turn and pressing into the top portion of the green body at the pivot point.
John Deere suggests 2 causes, neither of which apply to us. 1: changing the hydraulic hook-ups to match those of a Case. 2: trying to move something too big and heavy. Soft dirt is not too big and heavy. Cylinder replacement part costs $633.45.
