i just recieved a book "THE OPERATION, CARE AND REPAIR OF FARM MACHINERY" twelfth edition. cool book! it was published by jd and printed by desaulniers&co moline illinois. lots of pictures and drawings. all tractors are unstyled. lots of neet stuff in the appendix. how to measure corn in cribs, how to figure acreage per hour, cistern capacity, board feet in logs, height of trees. after each chapter there are questions like a textbook. all tractors and equipment are jd. cut aways of equipment show in red areas that are oiled automatically. each piece of eqiupment seems to have its own chapter. any info you might have to share would be appreciated. i would like to know the publish date.

I taught an Ag College course in farm machinery at the Uni. of Nebr. from '59 'till '66. The JD Omaha Branch gave me boxes of these books to distribute to the students. I still have a few of the books. No multiple copies.
Additionally, I tipped the Branch off regarding outstanding graduates and in turn they loaned me tractors and equipment to keep my farm machinery lab stocked. Later i went ot work for JD. Always figured I'd end up reporting to one of my former students but that never quite happened. Close, but not quite,

Those JD books were my favorite "library books" which I read from cover to cover when I was in "study hall"(which was adjacent to the library)and when I should have been cracking other skool books and learning how to reed, rite, and solve quadratic equations. I STILL remember reading about the modern "Roll-A-Matic" front ends which were quite foreign to me since both of our pre-war JD A's were wide front ends.

Deere published 28 different books in the series and I am pretty sure that your's is a late 30's era. They all contain a wealth of info. and I refer to mine often and the last 2 in the series are just about an inch taller then the other 26 books. Some of the books are quite pricey but I have managed to put a complete set together. If you are looking for others I have an extra copy of the 10th and 17th editions that I would sell.

I have a 14th edition of this book, given to me by my son who purchased it on the internet in 1999. Don't find a copyright date but it shows early styled tractors must be circa. 39 to mid 40s vintage, a very interesting book.

When I was in High School, the local JD dealer gave these books to the Vocational Agriculture Class. I have the 24th and 25th editions. The 24th edition shows pictures of the lettered series of tractors and the 25th shows pictures of the number series tractors. I believe the 25th series might have been printed in 1953, going by the tractor pictures. But, I am not really sure.

I got mine the same way you got yours. Mine is a 28th edition that I got my freshman year. It is Copyright 1957 and features the 20 series tractors. This is a great book, showing how farm equipment works, how to set it up, etc.

From what I've been able to find out, the 1st Edition (not numbered) was published in 1927, so yours should be a 1938 version.

They were published annually and numbered sequentially until 1952 (26th Edition). They skipped 1953 & '54, published the 27th in '55, skipped '56 and published the 28th (and last) edition in '57.

It's been a while since I was told that, so I hope my memory hasn't failed me - it's pretty close, though.
