Went to sell some scrape iron today.
Theres two JD (A)s there some one had sold for scrape.
They were mostly complete except for engines and hoods. I asked if I could buy them and the guy told me they got a new manager last week and he wouldn't sell anything out of the yard. Before you could get anything you wanted for 12 cent a pound. It's heart breaking. Some one sold them for scrape at 1 1/2 cents a pound.

Carl

If you could guarantee me that my JD would hit "Benny Lauden" on the head when dropped, you can come and pick it up right now.

The fellow i purchased my machine shop from use to tell about the different hit and miss engines they busted up during WW II for scrap. he also lamented that it was japan that was purchasing most of our scrap in the twenties.

When New Idea went out of business they sold
truck loads of new parts, hay conditioners, corn
pickers, etc for scrap. In the same yard were
thousands of new Huffy bicycles, frames and rims,
no tires.I was told they changed models. They
wouldn't sell anything out of the yard either.

Ray,
I would like to get more info on New Idea scrapping out those machines in the St.Mary's junkyard.Would this have been when Agco moved everything to Kansas or before? E-mail me if you get a chance.
Thanks,
Jim W

Ray, You must live in NW Ohio somewhere. The junkyard you describe sounds like Omni Source in St. Marys. Shortly after Huffy closed up shop in Celina I took a load of scrap to the junk yard and there were bike parts everywhere. Tried to buy a couple of rims for my boy's bikes. Got a whole sermon on why they can't sell to the public anymore. As a kid that is where got all my bike parts except tires. I remember 25 years ago seeing whole AC, JD, and Oliver pedal tractors in the aluminum scrap piles. Too bad I didn't buy them all then and hang on to them. DaveH

Dave,Yep,that's the place.Back in the late 60's
dad bought new hay conditioners,spreaders,and
crimpers out of the junk yard, somehow New Idea
found out and stated busting them up before
junking. They used to run forklift prongs into
the sides of new spreaders. The junk yard at Troy
got several loads of new picker rolls, gathering
chains, and pto assembly's.The last 100 super pickers were sold to someone in canada, and were
not to be sold to anyone in the US.

Howdy all,

Yep, it's pretty awful. Funny thing is, if ya go back a few decades it was the old steamers that were being scrapped for a little bit of nothing. Especially during WWII. I wonder how many case steamers were dropped on germany in the form of bombs. I saw a story a few years back in farm show magazine. Some fella had been buyin tractors and old threshers in the west and was makin a "unique" artistic piece. he was buyin these old pieces of machinery, lining them up and using them as a fence. Bout broke my heart. God bless.

Well, that a thought.
If they drop one of those JDs one Saddam and the other one on Bin Laden, then it wouldn't be such a waist.
