The way my G drinks gas,it would be awfully expensive to try and put out a crop with it nowadays.I have heard of 2.00 a gallon talk already.

I can remember my Dad comparing fuel usage in the mid sixties when he traded a 730 gas for his first 4020 diesel. Pulling 3 16s behind the 730, he'd use between seven and eight gallons per hour. We pulled 4 16s with the 4020 and used about 3 to 4 gallons per hour. I don't know if fuel economy was as big an issue then because as far as off road fuel was concerned, gas was probably 25 cents a gallon or less and diesel fuel was in the low teens.HJ

I don't undrstand I have JD60 and pull a 10 foot disk all weekend on less then 2.5 gallon an hour
If your want to really consume some fuel try a farmall M. Doing the same work it will consume 5+ gallons per hour.

Triva .1960 oliver 1800 gas was one of the most economical tractors tested at Neb.tractor test station. 720 JD was one of best diesels tested. On kerosene was the Case model C.On propane was the model 940 Case.On tractor fuel was the Case VAC.

But the farmer will take the fuel off as a tax deduction and actually make money on the deal..

I have a 48A hard work uses about 2-3 gal an hour so I really doubt fuel consumption put them out. What made them obsolete was lack of three point, low hyd lift capacity, lack of live hydraulics and live PTO. It is still my most fuel efficent tractor to get reasonably heavy work done.

I've thought about this same issue a number of times, and the reality is that it takes HP to push WEIGHT through soft ground, so big tractors need LOTS of fuel to just push the tractor. We quit using our JD A because we needed to GET WORK DONE QUICKER with fewer people, and that was really the main reason, not necessarily the fuel efficiency. The most fuel efficient tractor I ever knew of was a Massey-Ferguson 35 that our neighbor used in his peach orchards.

I wouldn't say that that fuel inefficiency put the old tractors out of production. I used a 52 B to sew 118 acres of wheat with a 12' drill and only using 2.5gal/hr. That is nowhere close to what I would have burned with out 2440 Diesel tractor doing the same task. But, when you're talking about the big gas burners, out 720 gas will drink a lot. Even though it's inefficient by today's standards, I love to plow a little with it. Nothing like hearing those old beasts pull out in the middle of a field. Tyler

For a gasoline engines the 520/530,720/730 and best of all gasoline two cylinders the 620/630 would better 11 HP per hour per gallon.Excellent efficient for any gas engine The numbered two cylinder diesels would run 16hp to almost 18 hp per hour per gallon. Still some modern tractors today that can't beat those numbers.

fuel consumption made all the old tractors obsolete. I've got a compact 4400 and it uses 1/2 the fuel that an old cub internation did. Go figure....35 H.P. versus the old gas 16 H.P. and using 1/2 less fuel. One could not afford to use the old tractors except show and real light use.

We once used our 49 A to pull a round baler. (Only made the bales about half size) and we were burning about 8 to 10 gallons an hour. That would be pretty expensive hay baling with gas at 1.59 a gallon here now,

Craig , I don't know how anyone could possibly get an A to use that much fuel short of dribblin' a pencil size stream across the field out of the carb or fuel line. If it wasn't that it hadda been smokin' like a coal burner! Mguy.
