I have an Allis Chalmers cycle mower (circa 1955). This mower hangs on the back of the tractor using one of the two point hitch knuckles. I have gotten it working great but when I put it down in the alfalfa, it would not let the cuttings pass over the bar. All of the cut alfalfa piled up on the bar until I had a pile literally 20 to 24" tall. Any idea what I need to adjust to get the cut grass to pass over the bar? I currently have the bar positioned so that the teeth are slightly elevated in the front. I was afraid I would pick up rocks if I leveled it. Thanks for any help.

What is your ground speed?---first gear? Mowers generally run in 2nd or 3rd on a WD Allis- 2-3 1/2 mph. Slower.....the cropo drops on the cutterbar.

After thinking about this a while, the ground speed question came to me too. Strong wind from behind will be a problem too. The old grain binders and grain swathers had what was called a wind board across the back of the platform to keep the cut grain from falling forward rather than onto the platform. But it would be tough to try to add that to a sickle mower.

About all I can say is to make sure the sections are good and sharp. Also you might try varieing how high/low you run it, and also try differant adjustments. By the way what type of guards do you have on it. Do you have the open front type of the one they call rock guards. I owned a good number of the old sickle mowers and have never had the problem your haveing.

Don"t know what to tell you to correct the problem, but wanted to mention the machine is a "sickle" not "cycle" mower.

Thanks for the clarification. I guess it don't cycle anything, not even the grass cuttings. Just a little funny! Sorry!!!

Probably use 3rd gear and the throttle setting that will give you 540 rpm. Much faster and you will lose sickle sections. May have to use 2nd in heavy grass. We cut alfalfa in 2nd gear and engine at about half throttle with our Fords and Fergusons.
