My friend bought a marina which caters to the wooden boat crowd and is faced with a dozen or so decaying hulks which need to be destroyed in some cheap, effective way.

He asked about using a forage harvester to chop them up, but I explained that while a corn cutter might be able to handle brush, the metal would kill the knives in short order. I might be wrong.

Burning the boats is not an option. Far too many of the old ones are full of white and red lead paint and caulking. Cutting hulks up with a chain saw and loading them into dumpsters will work, but he can only get one boat into a dumpster and that costs $500. per load plus a lot of labour.

I suggested getting an old bulldozer and giving them a good crushing before further disposal.

Any other suggestions?

I had a 20 foot fiberglass cabin cruiser that I needed to get rid off. Fortunately my inlaws own a garbage business so we just backed it up to the rear of the packer truck, hooked the cable to it to help get it in the hopper, and ran it into the truck.

A boat has to be registered just like a car so there should be information on the owners of them and so it would be the legal owners responsibility to take care of them and if you just got rid of them you could be charged with theft of them even tho the owners should have been paying rent for the storage of them

Must be a small dumpster to fit only one boat, well, I guess it depends on the size of the boat,lol, But if chunked up with a payloader and squashed down, you can get a lot of stuff in a BIG dumpster.

Around here, NO ONE will let a wooden boat be blocked up in the yard, they just end up inheriting them and get to pay to dispose it.

If possible float them out and sink to make artifical reefs? Check with dive shops they love that kind of stuff.

Put them on ebay (seriously) someone may see value in them. All the little pices and parts you just can't get anymore.

you need a Morbark tub grinder. These are big tubs that grind wood waste like stumps, old buildings, etc.; 450 hp motor, grapple could pick boat up by stern & ram bow down into it till it was gone. Companies specialize in doing this & roadway clearers, tree trimmers, disposal sites would know who does. They couldn't move the grinder to you for that small amount but you could truck the boats to them. Do a search for Morbark, Peterson or Bandit grinders chippers.

2x4, your right of course but if he can't pay for a dumpster he shore can't pay for a Morbark! You couldn't get it moved there for 5 grand much less started up.
