I just bought a no. 953 running gear it has leaf springs on the front and back with 16 inch tires. And i also have a 953 with a straight bolster it has 15 inch tires. What my question is when they were built. I have a pocket ledger dated 1947-1948 it has a 953 it is a straight bolster but no leaf spring these were most likely an option i just want know if anyone knows anything about these gears. These wagons have jd on the dust caps on the wheels. Thanks for your help Delbert.

I think i may have 963,s they are heavier gears. They do trail down the road 40 / 45 mph not a problem. Anyway they are both hay rakes and will be used for that. I gave $175.00 for the first one and $150.00 for the last one. Think kinda resonable price. Since i have seen them bring more without a bed.And i have seen them sell for less also. Thanks again for your help Delbert.

1954 or earlier if memory serves. I have the JD parts CD and the hard copy operators manual. Between the two I was able to narrow mine down to approx 1951-1953. The old 16" tires were date stamped 1952 as well. Great wagons. They will tow "as straight as a string" down the roads at speeds too fast to believe possible.

i have an operators book for a 953 wagon.it shows 3 bolsters, solid, rocking and springs.it does not show a dust cap with JD on it.it is just a plain light press in cap.i looked and it does not say anythind about brakes.953 is a 4 ton gear.i also have operators book for a 963 wagon with brakes.it shows only springs and it is 5 ton.it shows the big cast iron hub cap, dust cap, that screws inside the hub.on the end it has a big hex cast that forms a nut for a wrench.this is where the JD is cast,on that nut.they must have made other versions of the 963.they are not shown in the book that i just bought.this summer i bought a 963 with spings and no brakes.it has the cast iron hub caps with JD and 16" wheels.i thought i bouhgt a 953 untill i studied the books and found out different.somebody else on hear said the 963 had a steel plate welded on the bottom of the tongue, my has that.i thought smeone had put on there.it looks as old as the rest of wagon.you can't see that part in the books.the next time i see a 953,i will check it out.according to my books only 963 had JD on hub caps.the hubs and caps are deeper, stick out more,on 963 than 953. hope this helps.good luck.

here is one thing i forgot about.on the 963,on top of the axles near the ends of each spring there is a half round thing that looks like a tube cut in two and welded on.i think it a bump stop for the springs.they are shown in the 963 book and mine has them.they are not on the 953.somebody else said that on here.

sorry,i said the caps are cast iron.i think they could be cast steel.it is the same material the hubs are cast out off.they are cast, not the light metal ones like the 953.

I have my grandfather"s 953 (still has number visible on it) that was bought new in the late 40s, with the screw-on JD bearing caps. I"m thinking sometime in the mid-50s the change was made to a different hub.

then my operators book for a 953 must be for the later model.it does show press in hub caps.my grandpa bought a new JD wagon with a heider wood barge box new in 1950.i just can't remember the little detailes of it.i grew up with that wagon. it had leaf springs on it.in 1957 grandpa and i built a 16 ft. by 8 ft. hay rack for it and we loaded 110 hay bales on behind the baler.

The 953 was made fron 1940 thru when my parts book was printed in aug. 67 and did come with or without leaf springs and the 15" rim came out in 1950 altho the 16" was kept in production. The springs were an option, they also had brakes as an option.

Delbert,

I suspect you have a 963. I can e-mail some scans from a brochure that will help you figure out what you have.
