Firewood spreader project: PTO shaft

I'm trying to make a self-unloading trailer out of a junked spreader.

The tractor end of the pto shaft didn't come with the deal, so I borrowed the half-shaft from my snowblower, but it didn't fit!

Inconsiderate. The New Holland shaft is rectangular, rather than square. Will the female/tractor end be hard to locate?

I know the beater shaft works properly, but I have yet to get the apron shaft to turn. Now that the apron is out and the beaters and floor are out, I need to get that shaft working to determine whether or not the gearbox is shot.

Turning the shaft along the side of the spreader doesn't work. Any suggestions?

New Holland 513 firewood spreader in reply to Rod in Smiths Falls, ON, , 11-05-2005 15:47:07
It's either a 513 or a 518 on the decal.

You guys are right: I don't understand how the gearbox works, though by turning the pto shaft I can easily rotate the beaters. With the stuck apron off I expected to be able to rotate the rear shaft but it doesn't want to move.

It must have been running when it quit. I got the $200 spreader from a junkyard (with an almost new apron, according to my mechanic) with two of the apron cross-pieces jammed, one into the gear selection mechanism at the front and the other onto a broken S-frame underneath. The two sprocket idlers at the front were pretty bent on their supports, though are undamaged.

Now that I know the apron is controlled by the yellow plastic rope at the front I'll experiment as soon as deer hunting allows some time.

Thanks for the suggestions, guys.

Rod

The reason for a rectangular shaft is so the you can tell more easily if the yokes on the universals are in the correct alignment. They do have to be otherwise they'll bind with small angularity. If you're making up a sheft, have the yokes on the universal in alignment and not 90 degrees apart.

You'll find the right shaft you need from some ag parts place somewhere. Hope you paid $100 less for the spreader without it, it'll cost you more than that to get the piece you need.

Spreaders have a clutch dealie in the gearcase to switch the beater drive off. As well they use a ratchet to drive the apron and this ratchet can be set to different speeds. All is generally controlled with a lever, 2 levers, or a string pull. Sounds like you need to figure out that control action? Be careful, some/ most designs do not let you turn the beaters on while the pto is spinning, or little broken pieces settle to the bottom of the gearcase....

If the spreader is New Holland, you have a dealer near you at Jasper that may have an old shaft in their boneyard. If not, we have a NH dealer here in Arnprior that has a "nice" boneyard. Let me know if you want me to go have a look and ask session with the boys.

Firewood spreader project: gearbox works! in reply to Robert Lorencz, 11-06-2005 07:52:31
Following the advice I received yesterday I put the spreader in gear and slowly turned the back shaft, so the apron should work eventually.

Today I picked up three lengths of 3/16 X 2" angle to provide support for the oak flooring.

When I have the floor on I'll have to look more actively for a pto shaft, as the junk yard has no way to track down the guy who sold them the spreader.

Thanks for the solid advice so far, everyone.

What kind of spreader is it? The apron shaft could be rusted tight, in which case you need to heat both ends w/ a rose bud torch tip to red hot and get it to turn by first turning the pto by hand. If you can egt it to turn a little, pump it full of grease(be careful, it comes out EXTREMELY hot and sometimes shoots in wayward directions. If posible, put a tractor on it right away and run the apron w/ that, and let it cool down quite a bit before stopping it. Keep pumping grease in also to get things lubricated. We had a H&S spreader that rusted tight. We brought it over to a neighbor who had a torch and got it loose, but by the time we got home w/ it, it seized up again.

There is no way to disengage the apron, only the beater on these models, don't know about yours.

"Turning the shaft along the side of the spreader doesn't work. Any suggestions?" You probably have already done this but I am going to ask anyway. Have you checked to make sure the apron is put in gear? All spreaders that I have been around have a way to disengage them.

Sid, I am thinking the same thing, my New Holland spreader will turn the beaters when the PTO is engaged but the apron doesn't move till you pull the rope and lift the apron lever up, 4 positions depending how heavy you want to spread and a final position that shuts off the beaters and allows the the last bits to run off the apron...Mike in Exeter Ontario

That rectangulat shaft is so you will NOT missalign the universal joints as missaligned joints will knock and wear fast, when you put that snow blower back together make sure you have the yokes aligned

A kudo for Leroy for the universal yoke alignment. I posted a note 11/19 and said about the same.

O.K., so the universals should be at 12:00 and 6:00 on both shafts to be aligned. Thanks for the tip; I never would have thought of that.

I've got an idea. Just go to your search engine and type in "Agricultural equipment salvage" and I bet you'll find something like "phone numbers". Get on your phone and call around to some equipment salvage yards. Maybe they'll have one. If that don't work for my local farm supply store sells them. Just check the dims. you need before you go or he won't be able to help you.Once again there's no magic involved here.

tractor supply or rural king if you have them where your at. take the shaft you have with you, but do some measuring between the tractor and wagon first
