I need to shorten the PTO shaft from my rotary mower by about 12 inches. As I do not have a metal band saw, any other suggestions on accomplishing this? Is there a cutting wheel for an angle grinder that would work?

Thanks for the advice...

The machine side is 1 1/4 inch square and seems to be solid. The hacksaw method would be far too much work...I'll try the cutoff wheel or the sawzall...

you can get a cut off disk for your angle grinder, try a 1/16 or 1/8 inch thicknes , but if you are going to cut the end that slides over top, on most shafts there is only a short section that does the driving, so no cutting there..

I know this will not be a popular comment, but a hacksaw will work.

Try using a sawzall with a good metal cutting blade 24 to 32 tpi(teeth per inch)

Dug,

I guess I don't know what Joel is getting at; you shouldn't need to weld anything.

Pull that shaft clear apart and cut both of the inside ends. Then slide her back together when you're done. You will have to shorten the PTO guard in the same way.

Have all of your measuring done ahead of time and cut the same amount off both the inner and the outter shafts.

However,

Sometimes the "machine end" of your shaft is already shorter than the tractor end. In this case, you shouldn't have to shorten both pieces.

just use wheel that came with it but allow 1/8" or so to make end even when done. Gonna weld end back on it any way

Hi Joel,

Just realized what you meant about having to weld it back together. The female end is "squared on the inside only about six inches. Glad you made that comment.
