Is there any rule of thumb on how to tell how heavy a running gear is/can hold if it doesnt have a tag on it?

we have always went by the number of wheel studs or lug's to tell

I recently bought a running gear with 4 bolt wheels and found a 4 stamped on the top of front axle, I am assuming it is a 4-ton wagon gear. It does have a tag that say's it is the economy model. Tom
