Auction tomorrow (Sat) morning. Need advice. New Holland Model 258 Rolabar side-delivery, pull type rake. Auction has 2 of them same model. They have 5 bars each. One has greasable ends on the bars, other has sealed ends on the bars. Both appear in very good condition, but paint faded, some rust, etc. No bends, no welds, no jury rigging evident, tires are traction implement type and look good. How is this model? Good points / bad points? What to look for? How much do they bring?
Thanks in advance for your help.
Tom

Thanks to all for help. Will go to auction this morning and see if I can get one. I am interested in the Rolabar for raking sudan-hybrid-cross hay; a wheel rake will not rake heavy sudan hay. 2 custom balers have tried it and the wheel rakes will just start overloading and jump up and down. Wheel rakes do a fine job on coastal.
Thanks again, Tom

A little advise if your raking Sorgrum sudan grass. A rotary sweep rake or a windrow merger work best. A roller bar rake or wheel rake tend to bring alot of stones into the windrow. Of course if your making dry hay this may not matter. I grow BMR sorgrum sudan grass when I can't get my corn in early enough and chop it all with a forage harvester so I barrow my neighbors rotary rake to keep stones to minimum.

I don't know what kind of rocks you have but around here roll-a-bar's don't bring out rocks, however wheel rakes do....

I agree wheel rakes bring up everything. Which is bad if you have a dirty field, but good if your raking fine grass. The first year I had sorgrum sudan grass I used a roll-a-bar rake to bring the swaths back into windrows. When I chopped I could hear rocks and grit going through the chopper, after I was done the knives were all dulled up. The next year I used a rotary rake and didn't have near the problems with rocks and grit going trough the chopper.

At least $2000 for a 258 in any condition, at least $1200 for a 256 and usually a lot closer to 2000.

been shopping for a rake for 1 year. Everything in any shape was $1000- $1800. Finnally got a mech perfect one from older retired farmer for 100 bills. NH 56 mech great needs paint. This man is one of the few gentleman farmers around. Is more interested in me growing as a farmer than he is in making money. God bless him and his family.

For parallel bar rakes, NH 256's & 258's are highly rated. Around here (s.w. Pa) the rakes you described would be $1600 - $2400. Dolly wheel & rubber teeth makes them bring more.

Here in South Central Missouri these would go for 1000-1200(higher w/dollie) this time of year. They really don't wear out if you do normal maintenance on them. Check the "U" joints on the drive. They aren't hard to replace if required and aren't expensive. Check the drive shaft from the wheel to the gear box. These are a couple hundred bucks. Same with the the teeth. If they are all worn out it will cost you a couple hundred to replace them all...Good luck.

Either of those rakes would bring $1200-$1800 here in the Northeast at a decent sale.

Can't tell you much about any specific model but New Holland was more or less the king of haying equipment for many years. A wild guess on the price would be $500 to $800? I've seen them go for less, but maybe not in as good condition.

I don't know about that price. No problem with the rakes as far as I am concerned but the rakes you describe in good condition with good implement tires on them might go a little higher than $800. Around here you can get $500 for a rusty NH 56 with old car tires on it as long as it works. Sometimes more.

Dave, you may be right, I think it all depends on what part of the country you are in. Around here a roll-a-bar rake is considered obsolete and ready for the iron pile, no matter how good it is. Seems everyone has to keep up with their neighbor and have one of those wheel rakes, and 6 or 8 wheels isn't enough, ya gotta go for the 10 or 12 wheel jobs, even if you have only 20 acres of hay.

I sure do know what you mean. What we got to do is get a mess of those "obsolete" rakes together and put them on a truck and auction them off up here in the springtime! I had the same discussion with a guy over a JD sickle mower. Less than $100 here and he couldn't touch one for $300 in his town.
