You could probably go to a bone yard and get 5 cylinders for what a new piston would cost. We've done it several times when we just needed another cylinder around, and we get them for $20-30, depending on how dirty they are. I ussually find the ones that are completely covered in grease and dirt but still look good underneath, because then it's most likely the hoses leaking at the connections. They've all been worth it. Depending on what size you are talking about, it could go either way. If it's a standard 8" stroke, I'd just replace the cylinder and be done with it. If it's a loader or something else w/ a long stroke, you may want to just shop around. I can get you the number of a place close to me that does show chrome, but I'm sure they could do a cylinder for you if you tell them it ain't gotta be a show finish. I had some tie rods done a few months back, cost $50 per peice, 7/8"-1 1/4" diameter, by about 18" long.
