A friend of mine just gave me a two row John Deere corn planter. How do you identify what model and year it would be?
Thank you for the help, Mike

the obvious answer is look for a plate--- the next answer i have used is to find a part number and take it to your "friendly" JD parts countre man--they can likely narrow the search dramatically by using their books. good luck

John Deere did not put any model or serial no plates on there planters, a few had a serial no stamped in frame but with paint and/or rust they will not be found

Leroy, Thats not true, starting in the mid-60's Deere did start putting serial numbers on the planters. On certain parts catalogs they mention what year they did start and what the serial numbers start at.

The 2 row was no longer made when they started that and it was with the late 494A planter and as he was asking about 2 row that is all I answered too, I do have a 494A that has the tag as well as 3 494, 2-490, 1-450, 4-290, and a 999, some of the older ones have a number stamped in the frame while others of same model do not. Untill they started with the late 494A and 694A or 694AN there identification was just numbers painted on. And no use confusing him with something thad did not apply to his planter.

Leroy, Not to draw this out, but concerning the 290 corn planter, starting in 1969 they had started to put a serial number on it (This is from PC-117, May 1970) Now, I am not disagreeing with you over how they used to stencil it on with paint on the back somewhere. My '51 FB has its serial number painted in on the back, while the the '49 model year I have, the only markins that were on there were 'John Deere - Van Brunt.' So we were both right, and I apologize for forgetting about how they used to stencil the numbers on as opposed to a Serial Number plate.

Acording they made the 290 a lot longer than I thought, I thought about mid 60's for last 2 row 290. I don't have any books on 290 that new. Learn something every day.

Need a lot more description, 3 point? 3 point unit planter? Pull type with clutch lift? Pulltype with hydrolic lift? horse drawen? Fertilizer? opener type? standard runner? Disc? other? There were too many models made to even guess without these answers.
