Might check with your insurance company first, you might get a shock. I tried buying a International road tractor, single axle, to pull a goose neck, i couldn't find a insurance company that would cover it for personal use or even farm use, they all said it had to be commercial no matter what.

I went to a Peterbilt from a Ford C-600 and pick-up. It was a good move. I haul big round bales, fertilizer and equipment. I have all the brakes I'll ever need, Power 3406 Cat and bullet proof gears Fuller 13 speed. I have less than $5000 in the whole outfit. I'm going to set up a fifth wheel hitch to haul my 26' stock trailer. Parts are also reasonable. PK

I pull a 40' gooseneck with a Lo-Pro International.I bought it used as a box truck, removed the box, shortened the frame and put a flatbed on it.33K gvw,466 engine, allison trans and air ride.Gets respectable mileage 14 empty,10-12 loaded. Has more than adequate power, excellent braking capacity, heavy tires, cruise control,a/c.No problem at the scales, pulls the loaded trailer like a dream.I have less in it than a used 1 ton pickup would cost.

Thanks for your input. What size International truck did you get? And you cut the frame, how did that work. My understanding was that you should not mess with the frame. I'm asking because I don't know.

Local company here buys box trucks and does this cut (remove intemediate shaft and slide forward) to make them in to VFD tanker trucks. Sharp rigs, does about 3 dozen a year.

I needed a hay hauler, guy who I had been partnering with for a long trailer moved to S.C. I dont mind going heavy in-state, particularly on short hauls, but decided I was going to have to get either a heavier truck and trailer or a bigger straight truck. 20' gooseneck will haul anything except my cab tractors (no reason to 'have' to haul them anyway).

New toy is a 1993 Intl school bus. Forward control, flat nose, air ride, DT466, 4 spd Allison, less than 90,000 miles for $1100. Figure it will make a nice 30' bed straight truck. Winter project with a plasma cutter.

It is a 2001 S4700. When I took the box off,all I did was unbolt the rear, slide it foward the length of the intermediate driveshaft, which I removed.Removed one crossmember. Drilled the frame to bolt the rear in,shortened the brake line, and took a gas chop saw and cut off the excess frame rail(about 4 1/2feet)One thing I did do while the bed was off,was to fabricate my gooseneck hitch and bolted it in the frame.I bought a new 10'steel flatbed, and installed it.Sold the box for about what the flatbed cost.Total investment not counting my time $12,000.Had about 20 hrs in doing it,only materials were some steel for the hitch,2 5/16 ball,2 d-rings for safety chains, trailer plug and a box of frame bolts.

Hi Jim,

I like what MSM has suggested as even with a F550 at 33kGCW is not working out too well for a guy on the dieselstop.com, 4 trannys and 4 differentials so far. The pilot bearing fails and takes out the input shaft and he has problems with his LSD failing.

I did a 7 State pull at 31kGCW with my F350 DRW this summer. At 26kGCW I felt I'd have high maintance costs even tho I had plenty of torque. However at 31kGCW this was just too much weight for a F350 and I had to baby my acelleration up or my clutch would chatter(slip). 22K miles on the clock so it's still like new.

Going with a class 8 cut back to a single axle then you would have alot of room for additional load weight if needed and zero extra maintance cost for any additional futhure weight.

There is one of the best discussions on RV.net about turning a class 8 into a RV hauler. Not alot of BS with factual info and discriptions on how they did the mods. It's on the tow vehicle forum if you want to take a look.

Is the loaded weight 25,500? Or is that the GVW of the trailer? What are you going to be hauling on it?

The 25.5K is the max load, trailer and cargo. I plan on hauling sm sq hay, tractors and farm equipment, not for hire. I have a F350 but its to small for a full load. Loaded that would put me at about 34K total. Yes, I will get someone to reply and say that he pulls 30K all day and it's OK.

You are right, someone will reply and say that a one ton will do the job just fine, but as the owner of a one ton, I agree with you, it just isn't big enough sometimes. Anything you put on that trailer that sits high enough to catch the wind just drags the truck down. You might want to check out a few full blown class 8 rigs.
