I aquired a JD 24t square baler in some business dealing for pretty well nothing. I am going to bale a few square bales with it, maybe 15 acres a year. Is a 24t any good? It has been sheded its whole life and was owned by an older gent who passed away. Anything in particular I should know about this machine? Good points or bad points? I am going to run it with a Kubota M4700 which is 42pto hp, will that work ok?

I had a 24T for years. They are slow compared to todays balers. They have a lot slower stroke, but other than that they are a very good baler. The knotter on mine never missed a tie unless it happen to hit the knot where you tie two bales of twine together.
I think it would work great for the amount of hay you want to bale.

Dad bought a new 24T in '64 and we still use it. The only time it misses tieing is maybe when it starts a new ball of twine. I think our secret of longivity is that don't run the baler at full 540 rpm on the pto, just to fast for all that iron in the plunger going around especially in light windrowed hay.

we baled tens of thousands of bales with one on our neighborhood baling ring without much trouble ( the baler, not the neighbors). In hay we could go all afternoon and only miss a bale or two. Of course any machine can give trouble if it is not taken care of.Jim

No problem there. Get a manual. Adjust it properly if it isn't already. Make sure you keep the knotters clean or they might have some trouble tying. Find all the zerks...there is a reason they are there.

So why don't you bale them on a wagon. Is it more fun to pick them up in the 95 heat?

Cause I don't have any wagon's. If I find some worth the money mabye I'll bale onto a wagon. Up till this point I've only baled round bales, so no need for wagon's.

The 24T is a good baler, if it is adjusted right. I don't know how big your Kubota is size wise, but I know some of the smaller tractors rearends can't handle the constant pounding of the plunger.

It is a utility tractor, not a compact. I have pulled my Hesston 5500 round baler with it in a pinch. I have an Oliver 1955 that dynoed near 130pto hp, that surely wouldn't work?

I'd be a little nervous w/ the Kubota just because of the PTO wear & tear, but the 1955 is a bit too big, although it'll work just fine. Our neighbors use their White 100 and 2-135 on they're baler, think they've run a 14t the last couple years. We baled once w/ our 1755 just because it was in the feild already up the road chopping straw.. I just don't like how the engine has to run so &*^$)_^ fast to get 540 RPM. We run a Massey 12 baler behind our Massey 285, pulling wagons. It's a great combo, tight turning radius, plenty of weight and HP. We've been using this combo for 20+ years now. We have run it w/ our 165 once when the 285 had a flat, and the 1600 used to run it before that.

that 1955 would work great on a baler. might be a little thirsty. however enough weight to handle the baler and the wagon. Hillsides or whatever you wouldn't get pushed around and wouldn't have to worry about the pto handling it.
Just remember to use direct or overdrive going down hill as it will freewheel in underdrive.

I'm not baling on to a wagon, just droping em on the field. Also my fields are flat. I think I'll probably put it on the Kubota, it is pretty tough for it's size. It shares the tranny and final drive and pto with the larger 57 hp model so I think it should handle it. The 1955 is a little clumsy, but I might try it cause the cab sure is nice when it is 95 outside. This is my first venture into square bales, But I currently bale about 80 acres of rounds.

from 1974 until 1996 my uncle baled with a 1755d wide front(same size as 1955), Int 46 baler pulling wagons. In the 70's and early 80's I spent a lot of time on the wagon was very nice having that heavy tractor up there especially on slopes. In the 70's was baling about 20,000 bales a year. I have baled for other people behind 8n's riding the wagon can get scary, defintely slow. Your Kubota will handle it fine, so will the 1955. You can only turn so tight with the baler running anyway.
Good luck
Ron

We pull a JD 14T with a New Holland TC30 which has less PTO HP and weight than your Kubota, we have also pulled that baler with my Kubota L2350 in a pinch, it works fine. The fields we bale are flat so we do fine pulling wagons around with the baler with these tractors as well.

Your Kubota will do great pulling the 24T.
