JD Planter Questions

I bought an old JD 246/247 planter. It's in pretty rough shape and I'm doing some rebuilding and refurbishing. The chutes in which the fertilizer flows through to the ground are metal spiral cylinders. Both are rusted beyond repair. I have seen some rebuilt planters that have plastic tubes that replace the metal ones. Are those available through JD? Are they possibly aftermarket replacements? If so, any ideas about where they can be found? Any ideas/suggestions are appreciated.

Thanks for the information. Shoup does actually carry the plastic tubes, $6 and some change each. Not too bad considering what JD would probably want for something similar.

I just restored a 246/247 planter. I think I may have a pair of tubes if your interested. I don't need them as mine doesn't have fert boxes. You can get decals from K&K.

I have been using black hose for over ten years on my 246 with good results.
Later,

The spril metel tubes are no longer avaible for the past 20? years and the replacement is the flexible rubber tube and it requires an exact fit with a wire bracket to hold the tube in place at the bottom and that is avaible only at John Deere as the tubes from the other places are not the correct size and on the drills they do not have to fasten to the opener at the bottom. I have several planters that I need to replace that on in my rebuilding prossess but I have not yet bought any because of the cost. After you get the special fastners from Deere then you may be able to get the tubes from aftermarket

Those metal tubes were also used on other planters and grain drills and you might find another JD dealer that still has some for something else and cut them to right length. The plasic tubes are available at dealers or aftermarket tractor & farm supply places. Can also use any plastic or rubber hose in bulk length that will fit.
