Thought I'd pass this bit of info along to those you who have these old hand cranked shellers and needing to replace the chaff fan belt. I looked high and low trying to find a replacement belt that cost an arm and a leg. I finally stumbled across this perfect replacement that is cheap...it is a Maytag dishwasher drive belt. It is made of some kind of clear plastic rubber material and is a perfect fit on the 1B sheller and probably fits others as well. You can find them on ebay for about $7.50.

Post the Maytag # if you have it please. Thanks. You can also find the round leather belt material in bulk or cut to length from some antique parts vendors like Pederson & others in Gas Engine magazine and staple it together for an original looking one. I've also seen some just use a black rubber V belt on the JD shellers also.

Glen,

I don't have the part number, sorry. I went to a local appliance reapir shop and nosed a round and found this belt, they told me it was a Maytag dishwaher belt. I bought it and it fit perfectly. Then out of curiosity, I rean a search on ebay and found them. I didn't see but one kind offered..the same as I bought. The beauty is it is the correct diameter and round and ONE PIECE..not staple joints. No, it doesn't look original but works like a charm. My old sheller was bought with the original and optional motor mount. I had to mount a 10" pulley in lieu of the flywheel. It gives a 5 to 1 reduction because of the 2" motor pulley. So, I figure a tad less than 300 rpms on the sheller shaft (1750 rpm motor). The speed is just right and it sure makes the chaff fan sing!

Ok, thanks. That belt probably works better than the original leather one anyway if you are using the thing. I use to have one of those JD shellers but flywheel was bent up and traded it to someone that just wanted it to look at and not use. He painted it all up and put a leather belt on it. You can adjust them and they do a good job of hulling black walnuts too. Got another sheller I use for that now.
