Can anyone tell me if they have done this, or if it can be done? I have an Oliver 73 cornpicker with 40" spacing. Is it possible to make modifications to narrow down to 30" spacing. I guess anything can be done, but has anyone done it?

I have a NI 325 narrow row picker and plant 30" rows, my neighbor has a NI 324 wide row picker and plants 38" rows. We help each other pick. As long as the corn is standing well, there doesn"t seem to be a problem. This year some of mine went down real bad and I told him to not even try his picker in it - you had to run exactly on the rows to pick it up without it piling up on the snouts.

I had a 73 that was 30" rows. I think I may have a close up picture of it around here somewhere, that showed the first elevator and head on it. If I find it soon, I will post back here.

I'm not sure how 40-30 would work, but we have a Wide 2-row Fox chopper, and we plant 32" rows. i think the head is 38, but I've never put a tape on it. We've been using it for 3-4 years now and it works fine, just have to keep it centered a little more than a regular narrow head.

That works for silage, as the ears are green. On dry corn, the ears like to fall off on some types of corn once it is dry enough to pick if you are man-handling the stalks that much.

The NI 300 38 inch picker I got many years ago did not have any inner chain on it, they were in a pile with it. The owner said he used it to pick 30 inch rows, and it worked better without the chains.... He didn't agree it worked well that way, just 'better'. I donno, I run 38 inch rows, so the chains went back on.

The Oliver 73 picker was made in both 40" and 30" row sizes, don't know what all was different and never checked my parts book to se if both versions were in the same book. Mine was 40" and sold several year ago but still have the book.

Probably similar to the way New Idea 324 (wide)and 325 (narrow) pickers were made. Rollers, gearboxes, etc. were the same, but cross shafts were shorter, center divider was narrower, frame was narrower, etc.
