I have a "Long" 3 point hitch backhoe and it has loss power. It will move a little but very slow and no power. When I take the fill cap off, it looks like foam some times like it"s pumping air in the system. How can I tell if the pump is any good ? The pump is a externial style pump that mounts on the pto shaft. It"s a 540 pto. I have changed the oil and filter but it didn"t help. Thanks for your time and any help !! Scotty

Scotty, you better get that automotive filter off and replace with a hydrolic filter specially made for the unit. My backhoe uses a special filter; I think the brand is spelled Griesen or something close. This filter is rated by flow rate.

Thanks, The name of the filter that came off of this unit was a brand name that I've never heard of in the oil filter world, "Prince"..... the part # is wore off and I don't know the model of this Long backhoe . But I am sure that I need to replace the automotive filter. Thanks

Hi , Be sure and get that filter fixed and back on asap . You wouldn't believe the amount of crud that makes it by the seals on a backhoe cylinder . ....Randy

Thanks Randy. I really ran it long enough to find out the trouble and haven't ran it any more. The trouble seem to be in the filter housing assembly I thought it was a stuck check value but really it's a releive value I think if it makes to much pressure this value is suppose to let it take a dump but it looks like the value is stuck shut so this really shouldn't be my problem. I've not had time to dig any deeper, I was so glad to get it working that I was going to walk away for awhile and come back to it later. I do have one thing that sticks in my mind . When I changed the filter I matched it up at a automotive store so I replaced it with a automotive filter ,do you think this could have been my problem from the get go. Pluged filter and then I may have screwed up with the automotive filter . What do you think ? Thanks Scotty

Hi Scotty , To be honest I don't know , but I don't think that a automotive filter would handle the flow requirements of a hydraulic system . Someone who would probably be able to answer this question would be J . Schwiebert on the Oliver discussion board . Good luck ...Randy

Hi,you are likely getting air in the line to the pump, for some reason or an other, if there is a filter before the oil gets from the tank to the pump it could be plugged or if the oil is to thick, wrong oil for the temperature, it can take to much to suck it thru the filter and pull in air thru a clamp, an other way to get air in the system is when your return back to the tank is level or above oil level in the tank and this adds air to the oil over time and makes it incapeble of building up the same amount of presure . I hope this is of some help

Hi, thanks for the info. I have changed the oil and filter but it didn"t make any difference. I have checked the clampa on the return side but they were tight. Is there any way to test to see if I have good sucking power and is there a way to check to see if I have good pressure. I thought I would start with the pump to make sure it was doing what it should. What do you think ? Thanks for your time and help !

it is hard on that pump to pump air/foam and will ruin it. first thing is to find out where the air is getting into the system then worry about the pump.
good luck

Well I have checked lines and filter for any signs of sucking air but couldn't find anything. That's why I was asking about the pump . If the pump gets weak will it make air in the system ? Thaks for your time

look some more. for foam to appear in a hydraulic system it has to be severly contaminated or more likly air is being sucked in somewhere. It will not show a leak where the air is being sucked in. Try changing filter(can suck air in around the gasket), redoping all conections, replacing gaskets in the pump or ??. Keep after it until you no longer get air in the system.
Good luck Ron

Hi, one more thing you might want to check is if there is a screen in the oil tank, there is some times a wire mesh screen in the bottom and if the machines been around for awile, crap can settle around it,because I am pretty sure air is getting sucked in on the intake side what you could do is, disconnectthe hose at the pump on the sucktion side and see if the oil runs out freely.hoop it helps you out.

THANKS EVERYBODY!Found the trouble. The oil filter housing has some type of check value in it and it is stuck. Took off the whole oil filter assembly and hooked the sucking line straight to the tank and it work great. I have changed the filter but that didn't work and that's how we found the problem . Thanks again !
