Does anyone know how a disc mower will work through forage sorghum 6' or taller?

My son has two disc swathers, one Hesston and one JD and we do a lot of custom work. I swathed some sorghum/sudan last week which reached as tall as 8", and was thick. Irrigated, second cutting. I was running from 5 to 7 mph in the stuff with a 15'-3" header without any problems. I don't think you can beat a disc swather for the heavy stuff. Just my experience and opinion.

Been off the net for a couple of days. Since the JD was a new purchase this past spring, I have only ran it one time so can't give a valid comparison of the two. The guy who runs the Deere ran a Hesston last year and complains that the Deere rides rougher than the Hesston because of the smaller drive tire size. All I can say to that is I think they will all ride a little rough at 10 mph unless on an exceptionally smooth field, which is uncommon for hay ground. The steering is a little different on the Deere as they have a "centering" feature that helps keep "wandering" down a little. I think the cab on the Deere is a little quieter than the Hesston, but that is only my opinion. I think the controls/instrument panel with monitors are a little more "user friendly" on the Hesston, but that may be only because I didn't have enough time on the Deere to become totally familiar with them. Hesston came out with new models of swathers this year and I don't know what changes were made over the previous ones. Would like to run one to see what they have changed. David
