I cut my hay with a borrowed Hesston PT10 Moco. This machine is borrowed from an older gentleman that I know.

He is having some medical issues and is going to liquidate everything he owns.

He wants $1200, I'm thinking more like $500. FUnds are limited and my only other way to cut my alfalfa is a 7ft sickle bar.

What do you think a PT10 is worth? If we don't agree to a price then it will go to auction. Should I take my chances at auction?

I realize their are better machines out there, It did plug in first cutting butother than that ran pretty well. By 4th cutting I didn't have problem one and ran in 4th gear(JD3010).

How many times have you borrowed it? For how many acres? Add rental to what you think it is worth. If this is still less than he is asking, then buy it at the auction.

I agree that since it was graciously offered, I would tred lightly on having him come down. That being said, the PT10's don't seem to go too high. Of course most of the ones I have seen sell are parts machines. One thing you may want to do is offer $1,000 which would be less a 10% auction comission.

While I agree with both posts, I think with my wallet. I do want to do the right thing though....

I'll let the market determine the price....

either pay his price since he has been nice enough to let you use it or pay what it brings at an auction which is market price for your area.
