I have had it with sickle mowers! Is there much difference between these mowers. I can purchase a new Lely 6' disc mower locally for a end of season price of $2500.00 much cheaper than qouted earlier this year. I do like that you can get drum mowers that do not need hydraulics or big hp. I do 20 acres of grass and 10 acres of alfalfa . I was just looking for thoughts and opinions on these two types of mowers. Oh and someone to explain it all to my wife.

Thanks Bill

CCM Drum or Lely Disc Mower in reply to Bill in SWIowa, 10-05-2005 10:39:35

Bill in SWIowa,
Either mower will be an upgrade for you. If priced a New Lely mower for $2,500 that is a great deal and would be hard to pass up. Lely makes a 165-5'5" cut and a 205-6'9" cut. You will likely need hydraulics for the Lely mower but they did make a manual crank-up model on the 165 but very few were made. This 165 Lely disc mower normally sells for $4,000+.

A CCM drum mower will not need hydraulics. It will sell from $2,200-$3,000 depending on the model chosen.

You did not mention the size tractor you have. A neighbor has pulled a 6 foot disc mower with a 253 MF. A disc mower has to have remote hydraulics, and, while I have never used a drum mower, I think they need only 3 ph. The people I have talked to with drum mowers like them. There is a night and day difference in disc mower operation and sickle bar usage. You can go as fast as you can sit on the tractor and the disc mower does not plug up. Be careful not to get plastic twine wrapped around the cutter heads, that will stop it up. The blades on a disc mower rarely break, and sharpening them is easy. Most of these comments probably apply to drum mowers. I agree with 504's comment on the Lely price. BTW, Vemeer has bought out Lely and will make them in the US.

Vermeer did not buy out Lely. They formed an alliance. Lely sells Vermeer disc mower cutter bars. Lely tedders are now sold with the Vermeer name. Vermeer is making Lely spreaders for them in the USA. Lely just got out of manufacturing in the USA.

That sounds like a good price on that disc mower. That is route I would take.
