Sickle Bar Mowers Again

I have been looking at ebay from time to time. Are these mowers pretty good? Is belt driven better thank pitman arm?

Thinking of running this behind '49 Farmall H.

I have a pitman MM mower and I mow ditches just fine. It is true, the steeper the ditch, the better off you are with a belt. If the ditch is wide enough, angle the tractor with the ditch and it will run fine. Mine is mounted on drawbar os it is little easier to see what is going on..

The balanced head mowers were developed so you could cut hay at upper and lower angles. Typically 90 degrees vertical, as low as 45 degrees below horizontal. Pitman mowers can not do that. Belt drive eliminated the pitman, which was restricted to a pretty flat operating plane. I have an 80S AC on a WD45, runs nice at 90 degrees vertical down the parade route, or trimming lilacs- cuts the ditchbanks real well.

The balanced head(belt drive) is smoother running, but the Woble-box(Balanced Head) is a expensive thing to fix. Be sure the balanced head is still nice and tight... I have used a 100 IH mower alot on an H Farmall, and it is a very good mower if it is in good shape. The 7" bar is ok, but if you have alot of ground to cover look for the 9" bar. The 9" bar is worth bit more.

That's what I use.Can get by with a lot less horsepower than a haybine or disc mower.And if I hit something like the steel pins the guy forgot about after playing horseshoes the damage is only a broken section.Cheap to fix.

Belt drive with wobble box is newer/ better, tho nothing at all wrong with the pitman stick either. You'll probably save a bit getting a pitman stick type, and not notice the difference unless you are mowing very steep angles.

if you are thinking about buying that one then ask Bigdog to look at it. It is in his hometown and he probably knows the owner. Belt is better than pitman.

Nah, really my connection is so slow even after STARBAND connection it just hangs up. It looks like the post has not completed (graphic bar at bottom of screen) and I hit STOP (red x) on IE and the SUBMIT again.

All in errors.
