Big shredder question

I bought an IH 1466 from my late father-in-law. It is a good tractor but way too much for my needs, and a guy at the Case dealership has been pestering me to sell it to him. Here's my problem: I also bought a 14 foot (not batwing) John Deere shredder (model 1408) that uses the 1000 rpm PTO. I would like to go to a more medium-size tractor, but does anyone know how much PTO horsepower I need for the 1408? I have a good 7 foot cutter but would really like to keep the bigger one.

Thanks, guys for your replies. I also asked my John Deere dealer here, and he also said 85 hp would be a minimum and that only for pasture shredding. Appreciate your good info.

All I've got are 86 hp Fords, pull 15' and 20' batwings frequently (and have for 15 years) never had a problem, even in heavy brush on very steep and rocky terrain.

I'm with you on that one. We have a sink hole on our farm (one about an acre and pretty good slope as in it drops about 2 times as much as it travels) and we have use our ford 6610 on our b320 woods 20fter. I think the biggest issue will be keeping the front end down on the tractor. I have a 7000 allis that is supposed to be 106, probably more like a 115, and it doesn't lug down at all on a batwing until you get into the real heavy stuff. The 6610 will lug down pretty good, but our 7610 (86 horses) will not have a problem either. The 6610 is 72 horses too. I would say you would be fine with a heavier 80-100 hp tractor. Just have enough weight on the front to steer going up some steep hills. If can be scary trying to use the brakes to steer a now 2 wheel tractor when you least expect it.

Grandpa, i personally would not go lower than 100 horses on your tractor. 70 to 80 horses will be adequate to handle it. But!....what if you take the noition to trade up to a bat-wing 15 to 18 ft? then there you are stuck witha severly under sized tractor. I have seen a 4230 backed waaaay up in very heaavy weeds. So case in point there is no substitute for horse power. A 4020, 4230, 966, or anyother comperable Hp tractor should be a good choice. Good luck on your new-to-me tractor hunt.
Later,
John A.
