Lawn Roller filler

Recently bought a fairly new lawn roller from my neighbor. It is a large one about 48"x24" painted steel. He had it filled with plain water. I am worried about rust from the inside, there is presently no visible rust on it. Is there any thing that I can put inside, aside from oil, to prevent it from rusting? I was thinking about RV anti-freezer but maybe there is something better.

Thanks,
Doug

You will have to drain the water every fall if you live where it gets below freezing. That is why I think antifreeze would be great.

Consider used antifreeze from your local auto dealer/repair shop? Friend of mine built a 8 foot roller, (7,000 lbs) and filled it with used anitfreeze form a local car dealer. They were glad to get rid of it, and it should protect you from rust and freezing. If in doubt, throw in a gallon or two of new concentrate to bring up protection level.

I agree that car and truck shops are a good source of used antifreeze, along with construction companies. They usually have to pay to get rid of it, so they welcome people who take it. BUT- a roller 8 feet wide?, weighing 7000 lbs> what is the diameter, construction, etc.?

RV antifreeeze would be kind of expensive, if you go that route maybe try washer fluid instead?

Get it good and dry, and fill it with dry sand. I did it, and used play sand from the lumber yard (stored inside). It's been in there almost two years now.

I like this idea better than my idea of washer fluid.

Those where made to fill and then drain. Should not have water in it over any long term.
