Trying to explain the workings of a JD flail type forage chopper to my son. Says he"s never seen one. I"m looking for one to try for harvesting dense grass hayfields. - take off the rear cover, and throw it out behind, to dry, rake and bale. Anyone with experience with this approach? My brush hog does a miserable job of cutting the hay, so does my sickle bar! Anyone got some pictures on one of the choppers?

Go to JohnDeere.com. they still make fail choppers. A new one is a little over $10,000.

What you want to do with a green chopper is the same thing a New Idea Cut-ditioner does. Only differences is that the New Idea Cut-ditioner does not have the spout to fill wagons. Personally I always called those New Idea Cut-ditioners nothing but leaf beaters. The green choppers seem to chop up the hay even worse tha the New Idea Cut-ditioners. You would be better off buying a disc mower.

There is more of a difference between a Cut/Ditioner and a flail chopper than just not having the spout. Knife style, rotor style, etc. They are not good for alfalfa or clover, I"ll admit that. However, in grass hays, I"ve had excellent performance. Ground speed vs. rotor speed is important, as is the position of the knockdown bar and the rear flap. That"s why if you run one, you need a manual. A disc mower will mow fast, but depending on the kind of hay you want, might not get it dried fast enough to keep color without beating it a couple or three times with a tedder.

Ray, look around for either a New Idea Cut/Ditioner or a Mathews-Company Rotary Scythe. Both were available in either 7 or 9 feet. They use the flail priciple to cut hay, but have cup knives instead of side knives, so they don"t chop as much as a flail would, but still mow anything. They can be used to windrow cornstalks or other crop residues for bedding, as well.

I have a New Idea Cut/ditioner I use it to cut rhye grass to make straw with I love it it chops the stem so it is not so long it cuts a 6 foot blade of grass about 3 times it takes more power to pull than a lot of cutters but it will cut anything in its path even wind flatend crops I dont think I would use it on alfalfa but have used it in clover,orchard grass,fescue and it does fine. thanks

Better yet, save the money you'd spend on the green chopper as we call it and spend it on a haybine. NH is a popular model, and 7' haybines are pretty common from NH.

We've used our Gehl 7200 green chopper just to cut down weeds this way, and it still shredded the grass and weeds to a point.
