JD 224 baler knotter question

This baler rally makes nice square bales. When the hay is nice and dry the baler works perfect. Do I need to loosen the spring on that knotter?

There is a bolt that holds each knotter assembly down. Take the bolt off the knotter in question.
Flip the knotter up so you can see inside there. The problem in our case was incomplete movement of the swiper that pushes the knot off the bill hook (thing that holds the knot). You need to clean the mechanism really well and move the swipe back and forth thru it's full range. Compare it to the good knotter if not sure. Clean the bad knots off the bill hook and refasten down the mechanism. Grease it and run a few of your bad bales thru it by hand (CAREFULLY!) and see if it starts working. The baler works harder in heavier hay and that is when problems show up. If this is not your problem, try posting again with more specifics and I will try to find it in the manual. These are really good old balers.
