Can anyone suggest a source for a hydraulic cylinder for a JD 494a planter?

I believe it to be two inch cylinder with an 8 inch push, is that right?

Gary

I know nothing about planters or hydraulics
(that's why I call myself the Rookie Farmer).

Other than an 8 inch push do I need to make sure of anything else? How would I hook up the hoses to my Farmall 'H'?

Either single or double acting cylinder will work, what set up do you have on your Farmal H, the orignal single acting system or converted to double acting, and if you have the fertilizer boxes and want to ust them a 3" or 3 1/2" cylinder as the H is a low preasure system, if a early H that has not been converted you only have 375PSI on the hydrolics so you would need a larger cylinder to compansate for the low pressure, without fert. on low PSI then 3", with the higher PSI system then 2 1/2" will do and don't get a 10" stroke cylinder as that would bust the planter frame

Make sure you get an 8" cylinder. Anything longer and the planter will not sink in the ground. We have a 494A and they are a pretty good planter.

As the others have said, any 8" cylinder will work. I think we use either a 2.5" or 3" on it, don't have anything smaller. Are there any boneyards near you? There's LOTS of implements in there w/ standard cylinders. we've got a couple from the boneyard now, I think the last one was a 3"x8" for $20. Had to put new hoses on, so it cost us about $35 all in all.

Any 2X8 cylinder will work. It doesn't even need to have green paint.

I have a 494 that's been sitting in the shed for 20 years if you need parts. I just took the planter units off to use it as a side dresser for nitrogen. It's in SW WI. I never get around to shipping stuff so you'll need to be close enough to come get it.

TSCF , Farm Fleet etc. all sell cylinders that will work. Also any farm auction will have used cylinders.

Standard 8 inch stroke, 2-3 inch diameter works fine- available at any farm store, dealer, farm auction, etc.
