Valby Chipper

I've got a Valby 160 power feed chipper. The feed roll seems to bog down easily. When I got the thing I replaced the open center valve with a closed center one. I thought the problem might be with the 2240 tractor being underpowered, but yesterday I hooked it up to my 4020 and it does the same thing. After running it for a halfhour the lift arms and/or bucket stop working on both tractors unless I disconnect the chipper or let it cool down. Bad valve? bad hyd. motor or bad feed valve (that silver box thing next to the valve)?

The feeder roller motor on my Morbark looks to be smaller than what Valby uses but it never stops. When a branch gets caught it starts to chew through it. I can run mine all day and the hydraulic oil never gets warm, you definatly have a problem somewhere. If the Valby uses some type of flow controller to vary the speed of infeed like my Morbark and you simply swapped out the valve without consulting the factory or a hydraulic specialist I would guess that your problem lies there, I think the flow controls only work with gear pump, open center systems. Have you tried contacting Valby? They have a reputation for good service.

Thanks Butch, sounds right. Tried to Google "Valby", but couldn't find the mfgr's site. Do they go under another name?

Butch, Thanks again, did some more digging and found the outfit in New York state that imports them (they're mfg. in Finland). Guy there was helpful, knew the problem and told me how to re-plumb the valves. Let me know if you need the info.
