I'm talking about equipment made in '40's, 50's and 60's only, for general purpose farming.
My opinion on the following:

Tractor.....IHC Farmall... ;o]

Plow, Trailer Type.... IHC and Oliver

Corn Planter..... John Deere

Hay Baler..... New Holland

Disc Harrow....IHC

Corn Picker, Mounted..... IHC

Corn Picker, Pull Behind..... New Idea

Combine, Pull Behind.....Allis-Chalmers

Combine, Selp Propelled....Massy Harris

Grain Drill.... Oliver, IHC and John Deere

Sammy: The answer is so simple. Of the 8 to 10 mainline companies back then, it was the one that had the best dealer network in your area. Plain and simple that equipment was only as good as that guy right in your hometown that gave you sales, parts and service.

I've said many times, I've yet to see what I consider the perfect tractor. Same can apply to implements. I don't think I've ever seen a tractor or implement from those 8 to 10 companies that didn't have at least one feature I liked. IH 45 baler may be an exception, wasn't much to like about those.

tractors must be red with an IH logo on it somewhere!
square balers: Deere.
round balers when they came out: New Holland chainers.
combines are made from galvanized steel: A-C of course.
trailer plow:All I have ever used were IH,so I cant be objective there. Disk harrow: IHC, But an Oliver ain't bad.
Grain drill: deere is all I ever used.
Mower/conditioner: IHC
plain sickle mower:New Idea.

And Pick-ups are always Ford's and usually painted red.

Plow- Ollie
Chopper- Fox
Grain Drill-Deere (only one I know)
Corn Planter-Deere, again-only one I know first hand
Corn Picker-NI

You must have had a round barn? The New Holland "banana baler" could not approach the square true bale that even an ancient Deere 14T or 214T could make. IH tractors the best? You must have been purchasing torque amplifier parts at wholesale prices. And getting your fuel for free from somebody else�s tank with a hose after dark.

Disregarding the 60's, which we all should know JD starting kicking some real butt, JD was continuously losing tractor market share. Rather than our collective biased opinions today, I probably believe the farmers at that time knew what was "best" and bought accordingly. This usually was IH, and it was not the cheapest tractor. No doubt late 50's JD diesels were great on fuel and I own a couple, but the gassers are nothing special, except the sound. We had NH balers and "banana bales" were never a problem and it had a lot more capacity than a JD baler. JD disks and drills were equal to any, but the plows had a tendency to pull "out" in heavy ground. Result was full width in lighter ground and something less when the pulling got tough. Definitely not as good as Oliver and IH. Pickers were always NI, and Woods Bros was a nightmare for belt wear/slipping. The Allis all-crop for it's size was likely the best all around pull type combine.

What model Deere plows wouldn't stay in the ground. All we had was mechanical lift they always worked Ok for us.Maybe it was because we couldn't pull them very fast. I have noticed when we plow now with our antique tractors the Oliver & IHC plows seem to pull easier and the moldboard are slanted back a little more than the old Deere plows. I have noticed the hydraulic Deere plows seem to come out of the ground if they don't have deep suck share. And also if they put a bigger tractor on and go too fast. We plow some seed corn ground and it gets pretty tough where those big trucks pack the fields down. Earl In Illinois

Sorry I wasn't clear enough. The JD plows didn't come out of the ground they just didn't have enough strength, or weren't designed efficiently to use the steel/iron they had, to maintain a full width cut in hard ground. A older friend always said you could tell whcn someone was using a JD plow because the furrow/furrow wall was so crooked, looked like a snake path. Definitely would put models 66, 666, 55 and 555 in this class. Don't know about the 77 and 777 never saw any back home. Probably the 44 and 444 because they were so light.

I noticed that the plows will turn away from the furrow.When you get in real tough soil. I have seen several Deeres with wheel weights on the back end. It must have something to do with the draft. Weight wise that Oliver plow doesnt do that and they look to weigh about the same. Happy plowing. Earl In Illinois

Deere plows and tractor hitch have to be tweaked and tuned by somebody that knows what they are doing. Like any other peice of equipment It took me a couple of days to get my JD 415 somewhere close. Sway bar or chain adjustments critical. As are tractor rear tread width/offset from center to wheel furrow bottom. Some of my leveling problems disappeared with a few more psi in the tires. The tractor didn't squat as much when the pulling got harder. Even adjusting the rolling coulter depth and cut line made a significant difference.
