I am thinking of using my Vicon 7'10" disc mower to trim some pastures up. Anybody ever tried this? I am just going to raise it up about 8 or so inches off the ground and go, what do ya think?

I agree with the previous posts, and would add that I've been impressed how the disk mower floats over uneven ground. We have a lot of slips, which create mounds, yet the disk mower never scalps like a bush hog. And, as stated before, the ability to mow in untracked grass as well as the ability to reach out 7 or so feet is a huge advantage over a bush hog. A sickle mower offers the same advantages, but won't cut heavy wet grass. Mike

Too valuable of a machine. I have cut vacant lots in town with mine but decided it was too costly but did an excellent job. Buy a bush hog

Get a old IHC or JD mounted mower to clean your pasture up.

Save the good stuff for your hay field.

Yes, I used to with a Vicon CM240. We bought a Lely Optimo mower/ conditioner and instead of trading the Vicon in we kept it back for pasture topping.Actually we traded the Votex pasture topper (bushhog type thing) in for the Lely! It is a good idea to lengthen the top link a little to increase the cutting height and as been mentioned, please make sure the curtain is in good conditon. To be perfectly honest with you it makes a far better job than a bush hog, or any other mower that is mounted directly behind the tractor.Because the disc mower is offset, there are no uncut or raggy stripes due to the tractor wheels rolling the thistles (or whatever) down. Also cattle prefer to pick up any grass left by the disc mower than that which has been 'chewed up' by a bushog.

Disc mowers don't cut when raised 6 or 8 in up. They work like your old sythe and must "shave" it off. you likely don't want to cut pastures that short.

with a little retrofittin, you can temporarily mount a wheel at the end of the cutter bar to hold it at the height that you want to cut. this works great and does not put a strain on the mower.

Well I am gonna run with it about 6-8" high. I got wacked in the head a couple times when I used it on my open station tractor so now I only use it on my big cab tractor.

No, dont try and 'carry' it, something is bound to break. Tilt the disc mower back a bit with the tractor top link.

Watch the windows then. Also, running the bar off the ground is probably not the best idea since it will bounce all over the place and put a lot of strain on parts that aren't made to take it. I am sure it would be fine, but rather not risk it if it was me. I would just angle it back pretty far.

I've done it, also with Vicon. I just angled the blade back to get it high as possible. It cuts briars fine, best not to try sprouts over 1/2 inch diameter.
