Hi , Another lame question . Is pulling a spike drag harrow behind a disk harrow being redundant ? If not should the spike drag be the same width or slightly wider than the disk by say 2' ( 1' over on each side ) ? I'm going to start fine tuning my collection of " antiques " so everything works well with each other . Right now I have a 12'-13' disk , and a 30' spike drag . I want a 18' disk and a 18' spike drag if that's not being redundant in the field . Or a 16' disk if the drag should be wider . I'm getting the 18' hydraulic spike drag next month so if anyone is interested in a 30'er on a cart let me know . It's made by the Northern Wisconsin manufacturing co . Backwards folding . 5 section .

I got my field planted and fertilized last monday and last tuesday we got 1.5" of rain in about 2 minutes and 70-80 mph wind which took down 7 trees the largest of which was about 4' diameter where it broke off close to 8' above the ground . All of them broke between 6' and 10' up . Anyone want free wood ? Sooo guess what ? The field I worked so hard on to get smooth because of the washouts that happened last spring did it again ! Not so bad this time around so I'm going to live with it for next year if the grass would just come up and stabilize things before tonight HA-HA . Supposed to have heavy rain . I ran the spike around after the seed was put down with the fertilizer ( dry ) . It looked like it was burying the seed to deep . I tried it with the spikes up and also with them flat . It looked the same to me so I did most of the field with them flat just in case . I was out there yesterday finishing picking up rocks and there was some sprouting going on so I'm relaxing somewhat . I do have a excellent crop of thistle though :'( Can't do anything about it though as my wife won't let me spray because of the pet's going into the field to do their thing . No use arguing , she say's I wear the pant's in the family and I believe her :-) . So like this year next spring I'll be out there with a shovel walking around digging up thistle by hand . And some people wonder why I don't have any time !?!? ARGH ! I get 5 day's of vacation starting today ! Tomorrow I get to work all day setting up camp , I'm a buckskinner ( re-enactor ) so setting up camp takes me about 5-6 hours of nonstop sweating . See you in Ft. Atkinson , Iowa this weekend ! I'm the one under the two tree's to the right of the fort entrance in the wall tent next to the big tee-pee . Thanks . Take care ...Randy

I myself prefer exactly the width of the implement,I want that outside edge of the disk blade to show a track for making the next pass as with sometimes with the wider harrow it is impossible to tell where to go and also with it wider I have had problems with trash draging on the ends from the unworked ground and then we had fences for livestalk and with a fence or anouther crop (corn that has emerged next to field you are working) then with the wider harrow then you allways have a unworked strip at the edge of field. The last few years I have had to yue one wider than the disc and I hate it, have to make the first round outside of field without the spike tooth then hook up spike tooth and go around lapping enough that spike tooth just hits edge of field. and that is why you see so many of the disc or field cultivators with mounted harrows that are torn up is because they tried running a unit to wide for the front unit and will catch on everything. And I use that spike tooth on everything, behind disc, cultipacker, cultimulcher, grain drill, rotary hoe, spring tooth harrow

Hi , That makes a lot sense . So I suppose I'm going to look for a 18' disk to replace my 13' one . The problem I have ( and don't have the right equipment to fix ) is that when I disked the grass up the first time it threw large clumps into the fence line that I can't get to with anything but hand power . NOT ! I already have to dig weeds by hand , don't believe I'm going to rake back 30lb sod clumps by hand also . The edges of my field look awful . I sure won't be able to mow very close to the fence any more . Thanks ....Randy

That's what a back blade on the tractor does very well. Drag them chunks back into field only lifting the hydraulic level.

around here ALL disc's have harrows behind them... and they are 1 -2 ft wider than the disc... just works better that way. (2ft's a bit of a problem around fence and fence rows )

Hi edchainsaw , So maybe a 16' disk and 18' drag ? I was pulling a total of 43' of disk and drag before so my tractor should be able to handle 34' total now even with larger disk blades .

I hear ya about the width . That's why I got to rid myself of this 30'er ! I now have to replace fenceposts ( just the t-posts ) . With some more time and experience I'll get it right . Thanks ...Randy

yes that would work...

you can fit a couple of poles over the top of the disc and hang the harrow off of it and you will not have to have another caddy...

just have pull chains attached forward.

Hi Midalake , No , Don't have a 3-point , I don't think I've even seen one in my search's , Sorry . They are either loose or on cart's but they are all just the pull type . The one I'm getting is a 3 section ( 18' ) flexable , forward fold that has a round tube main frame that can be lifted to vertical and folded hydraulicly , all with one cylinder , on a cart . It's got the large chain style links between the bars and is held to the frame and drug by the normal chain setup , it just has a frame around each section so that the trailing end can be lifted with a set of chains on that end . Good luck in your search ...Randy
