One of the big problems with us part time farmers is we are not there all the time to scare off the bad guys. They stole about $1500. worth of tools last week. I have the box off a truck that they cut the pad lock from. Any ideas on how to secure tools? Lou

Thieves often strike twice or more were they had success before. Set out some thief bait covered with an invisible layer of this product. Then quietly check around the hospital emergency rooms after the bait disapears. They get the sticky but invisible oil on thier hands. Sooner or later they rub thier eyes, pick thier nose or they scratch anything else that's tender.

I used to stress petty, and not so petty thefts. Not any more, just not worth the hassle. I just try to keep my insurance up.

Since I dont live at the farm I let a guy put a house trailer there. He pays the water and electric bill for the farm and helps keep an eye on things.

I have been thinking about putting some sort of disguised tracking device in my stuff. I'm sure I never will but relish the thought of tracking down the SOB who walked off with my toolbox a couple months ago.

Mighta got my self in even more trouble as I thought it would be nice to spray paint THIEF on all sides of his vehicle.

Lou: A good dog will do wonders. You don't need a big or vicious dog, but rather one that makes lots of noise. You don't want the dog to come in contact with the thieves. Just keep them guessing as to who the dog may be alerting attention to the thief.

I remember once of tool thieves going through our neighborhood. Not a single property with a dog was touched, and none of the non dog properties were missed by them.

It's kind of like what Tom said; all locks do is keep honest people honest. Even if tools are locked inside a building if they need or want them bad enough nothing will stop them. I've had one thief even tell me if the light is on all that means is he didn't have to worry about tripping and breaking his neck and made it easier to see what to steal.

Lou,

Unfortunately, no sure-fire way exists to stop good thieves from doing what they do. Locks and alarms are only meant to keep bad thieves from doing what they do.

I've had thousands of dollars worth of stuff stolen from me over the years, and my only consolation is that someday the Righteous Judge will declare His verdict.

Good luck,

Tom in TN

I keep mine scattered all over. When they realize how much work it will take to round them all up if they can find them they go somewhere else.

I "hide" some things. For example I put my battery chargers, etc. in gravity wagons in the shop-electrical tools in the grain drill.

Won't save my wrenches but may minimize theft.

Did find 1 flaw in this plan. 1st trip to elevator with full wagon this year was not pretty when the guy dumping my wagons opened the gate and 4 toolboxes, a battery charger, and heavy duty drill fell out with the corn. Pretty embarrasing.

Its just leaves you with a bad feeling. I guess you just insure property, then a different group gets your $$. Lou

I"m hoping to pop on of those motion sensing wireless webcams up in my shop. I"ll be gone long days possibly a week at a time and many places are gettting hit here.

Being a small area I"d bet I"d be able to identify the two druggie kids down the road who brags about robbing places but never gets caught.

We put motion activated cameras around and in our building which are linked to a VCR that is only activated when the cameras sense something. We also have stickers on the doors to the building telling the thieves that we are watching them. (There is a camera mounted high above the front door which is easy to see.) The VCR is hidden and would be nearly impossible to find. Basically if you come in we will see you and you will be going to jail or worse. There seems to be a weird code of justice in rural Tennessee which operates like this: If you know who stole your stuff you might go to his place and have a discussion with him at which time he would replace your stuff or go to jail. That person would also be told to NEVER go near the place again. Anymore explaining would be superfluous as they know the consequences of doing so. So far we have had no problems at all and don't anticipate any even though the locals say we have a nest of thieves living in the area.
