Can someone tell me the differance between the John Deere 494, 494A and 495A planter. Any help would be great! Thank, Doug

The 494 series had a pair of valves (top and bottom) in the seed drop The lower valve was intended to eliminate seed bounce, and allow precise placement. The 495 series had a conveyor chain to carry the seed to allow precise placement and faster planting speed. I have heard that some people eliminated this chain assembly.

The 494 does not have that valve, the 495 does have a valve of some sort but they were not sold in my area, the 494A was a newer version of the 494 with some upgrades as larger fertilizer boxes on all and larger seed boxes on later units, the 494A had seeled groung wheel bearings where the 494 had no bearings and you just greased the wheel to axle. the same differences would be between the 495 and the 495A. The 12XX series planter is just a newer version yet of the same planter

A494 has a round pipe in the front to mount the fertilizer openers on. An A has a diamond shaped pipe on it. Later model. The openers on the A will not rotate on the pipe when you hit rocks. The openers break off. The 495 is ? a hill-drop planter----something is different about the seed drop system. All are 40 or so years old.

The fert openers will not rotate on either planter as the 494 has braces back to the frame to keep them from rotating. In my stock of John Deere planters I curantly have in from good to parts 1 494A, 3 494, 2 490, 1 450, 4 290, 1 999

My 494 did have those braces too, but if a shallow rock is big enough, they bend. Joys of farming-LOL.
