Hi everyone , First , Thanks for answering my sometimes really lame questions .

I went to a farm retirement auction sat for that van brundt drill I was asking questions about . From what I gathered on here , in most area's they go for anywhere from 100 - 300 bucks . STICKER SHOCK ! I just walked to my truck when the bidding passed $1000 ! I really don't know what it finally went for but it was WAY to much ! It was in good condition , kept in a shed all it's life and had single disk openers and galvanized boxes ( grain and grass ) , maybe it was worth it but I went with $300 and that's all I was going to spend . I went to a large consignment auction too and got a fuel barrel and stand for $10 . I could have had a Farmall H for $ 400 ( still kickin myself for letting that one pass ) but it was in pretty rough shape , no paint and it wouldn't start but coughed plenty so I think it was just flooded , another one went for $ 850 and it had a newish looking 5' woods belly mower and ran like a top but didn't have any paint left . They where pretty much givin' tractors away Sat. . Oh Well !

I need some of Allan's Luck to head my way ! ;^) ...Randy

I bought a complete and running Deere Van Brunt YB 17x7" for $600.00 Can peso's and figure it was a bargain. It's a green painted model , not galvanised. It has the early cast iron plate and spinner wheel fertiliser box. Always oiled and stored indoors, just a couple of bends in the hitch easily straightened out. No serious rust, just required some new grain/fertiliser spouts. I just pulled the fertiliser spouts off as it's cheaper to purchase bulk fertiliser and spreader wagon from the co-op. It would still drop fertiliser onto the ground just fine anyways straight to the ground. Should the grain spout/downspout hose plug, the grain will still fall onto the ground. It's a trip rope unit but who cares, she works just fine. Planted corn and sunflowers with it as well as the mixed grain this year. Only problem is she's under a tarp right now, she's too wide for the shed door.

I"ve got a JD single disk drill with legume boxes you could have free if you come get it. It is a split halves, 12" total I think. I bought it 5 years ago and a gear broke on one side so it currently only plants on one side (6 foot). I think I have the owners manual even. I am just west of Ames, Iowa if you are interested.

Hi Brent , I could be very interested ! BUT , I leave on vacation tomorrow and will be very busy for the next three weekends . I have to come down that way to pick up a MOCO parts machine too so maybe I could squeeze it on the trailer also . I'd like to see it but if it's not rotted out it will find a new home here if you're still willing . Keep in touch . My # is 319 240 2160 . Hi , No I don't . Is that the first model they made after the horsedrawn ? Or am I WAY off ? I remember last fall in the farm bureau magazine The spokesman I saw one for sale that was affordable for me . I'm not going to put a $ figure on that because it may not hold for your area , besides , my memory is deplorable ! I don't really know anything about drills or how to work a planter but that and plowing are the next things I want to learn . And from reading this forum I came to assumtion that a JD van brunt was affordable - most of the time - and that if they where taken care of did a fair job planting grass seed which is all I need one for , and that'll only be every couple of years or more . ...Randy

Randy, have ya tried stopping at any retired farmers homes and just came out and asked if by chance they have a drill they would be willing to sell? Many older farmers just let em sit as they do not want to deal with an auction and will be happy to walk ya around the farm and show ya what they got. Not all old farms out there have sheds for storage income. Many are housing a lifetime of pride.

Happens now and then. Two people want the same lawn ornament, or unusual variant or nice condition for the collectors of such. I collect plows, went to an auction and purchased a one-off variant for 1/4 of what I was willing to pay. Some dude who just wanted an old plow came up and asked why I ruined his day by paying way too much for "his" plow. I made his day worse yet by telling him what it was realy worth, lol. Better luck next time.

Here's Allan's luck. Went to an auction sale last summer and bought a IH 440 baler. Put new bearings on the plunger and sharpened the knives and replaced the knife on the twine cutter. Total bill about $350. Baled my hay and 2 of my neighbors for a total of 2000+ bales and left only one open. I like those IH balers.

That is good luck. I had an IH 46 baler for a little while, I didn"t have enough patience for it and sold it and a parts baler to another guy on this site. Bought a JD 14T, have had much better luck with it. I know where an IH white demonstrator baler is sitting. Not sure if it"s for sale, but I"ve been thinking of stopping and asking. It"s amazing what you find when your driving around lost at work, isn"t it?

i saw a nice 70s-80s model john deere go for less than that and am still kicking myself for that one.8500 i think was the model number
