Hi , I was wondering how many horsepower per plow bottom is needed ? Say I bought a INT.710 auto with 4-18's and coulters ( not spring loaded ) , would my 85 horse tractor ( single wheel 1755 with fluid ) pull it through almost any ground ? Sod? What about a 5 bottom ? Thanks ....Randy

Plan On 25 horse per bottom in corn stalks. I would add a few more ponies for sod. Sod pulls harder than hell. I have heard that they use to hook 2 M farmalls together to pull one 3-16 plow through sod on gumbo ground. Randy, do you still want that 990?

I don't get on here that much during the week and I'm leaving on vacation for the weekend on Thursday and I'll be busy the following two weekends also so how does the middle of Oct. do for you ? That will probelly be fine. Starting beans this week end so now things are starting to get hectic. By the middle of october we'll be on corn and it will be even worse. But hopefully it will rain.

Hi Seth , Sorry about the delay . If these times get in your way let me know what will be good for you on a weekend . I'm not in a big hurry so if you aren't either let me know . I can wait till after the snow flies if that will help . I'm not going to do anything with it till spring anyway most likely unless the weather stay's warm this year . Did you think about that plow price ? What was that again I forget ? How many bottoms ? Thanks ...Randy

I always figured it take 20HP per 16" plow bottom. I have never used 18"plows but it looks like 25HP per 18" bottom. It should be remembered that 18" plows not only plow wider but deeper as well.
You also shouldn't size the plow so that the tractor is maxed out unless you rarely plow. Around here a combination that will handle alfalfa will sail through anything else.

You will probably do OK with 4-18s but 4-16s would be a better match to an 85 horse tractor. I live in southwest Iowa, the soils vary considerably, even in the same field.

From what I understand of Iowan soil, the 1755 should be fine.

Here in NE Wisconsin, we pull an Oliver 546 4-16 plow w/ our 1855. I pull it in 3rd gear so I've still got plenty of reserve, but I don't think I'd like plowing any slower. Pulled our 3-16's with it before I got the bigger plow, and those bottoms got HOT because I was going so fast-4th direct/over! Our 1755 handled our 3-16's alrigth, but it was tired. It was better for plowing than our Massey 285 though, although it works ok on the plow as well. Did for almost 20 years till we got the 1755. Donovan from Wisconsin

I pull a 720 4-18's with my TW-20. That's 135 hp or so. I understand I could go 5 bottom and still pull it, but once in a while I can really feel that plow back there as it is, & traction is a problem plowing clovers as it is. I have the outer dual on.

I did pull it one time for 20 acres in a very, very mellow field with my 85hp 7700, but sure would not want to plan on doing that in all my clay soils or a sod or alfalfa! My 7700 handled a 4-16 pretty well over the years.

Your milage may vary, that is how it is 'here'.
