Looking for a used disc mower. What brand, good points, bad points, what to look for. How to tell if it's worn out Which brands are easier to work on or more durable.

I have a case-IH made by new idea that I bought used a year ago. I love it once I got it running. But becareful when looking. I got it bought right and it was a good thing. The dealer sold it as running, but I ended up putting $700 in it and the dealer felt bad enough that he gave me a $300 shaft. New idea mowers have a driveshaft and individual gear boxes. This seems like the way to go. The bar breakes apart in sections to make repairs easier. After my experience I firmly beleive that normally people do not sell a disc mower if it is in good shape. But if you can buy one right and don"t mind working on it you"ll be OK.

Mike, If possible, see the mower in operation. Listen for rattles, grinding sounds, whines. Raise the cutterbar and see if the shoes are worn out. New ones are about $50 each, maybe less, depends on make. Check oil in gearbox. On a gear bed cutter bar, bottom seal can fail and let oil run into cutter bar, running gearbox dry. Too much oil can ruin cutter bar. Check oil in cutter bar. If oil in either gear box or cutter bar has metal chips in it, walk er..run away. Kuhn mowers Caseyc mentioned are probably the cadillac of gear bed mowers. They have cadillac prices new also.

If the cutter bar is locked up, pass it by. The cost of rebuilding in money and time is too high. You would come out better buying a new cheap brand, or even a top brand. Get one that has nearby dealer support. Bear in mind that the cost of new parts for a gearbox or a cutter bar are such that buying a new gearbox or cutter bar is cheaper. Gear box--about $1000. new cutter bar--probably $3000.

Shaft drive cutters like the Lely and Vermeer have repairable segments so hopefully you would not have to repair the whole cutter bar. Avoid the Vermeers with the metal shield instead of a curtain because it is too heavy for the mowers framework.

Give serious thought to getting a new one and plan to take care of it.

Good luck. Hope you"ve learned from my mistakes.

i have an older gehl myself. it's a late 70's model DM160. it's a 3pt, 7 foot. it's kinda hard to find parts for but it hasn't given much trouble either. i love it and will never go back to a sickle. when i get the chance to step up i'll go with a hydro swing disc mower instead of a haybine. can't say much about any other brands but would think they're all good.

been a happy DM160 owner for 25yrs.

parts not hard -- Gehl and Vicon dealers are everywhere just have to look a bit.

seals go evrynow and then, deck plate wear is showing now.. (25yrs rember)

I've baught blades everywhere from a TSC, and rural king store and even a JD dealer.
its got 3 blades per disc so It has more of a chance to cut (I think -- but I know 2 blades does fine)

ya, blades are the only thing i've found easily! the nearest gehl dealer is 80 miles away. they are JD also so gehl is not their top concern anyways. i needed a few bearings and found them at a jobber in town. i bought cheap knowing it needed repair, but have been happy with it since.
