Old Bush-hog never dies

I got out my brush-hog for it's annual last year. We've got a couple acres that I mow only once a year. Anyhow, there was alot of oil that dripped from housing over the year. Two questions

1) Can I take a Brush-hog apart and replace seals/gaskets without knowing what brand it is. It's an old piece of machinery that came my way.

2) When filling the gearbox, how do I know how much lube to add. There is a fill hole at the top of the gearbox (not a vent, but a plug), but no hold midway up to indicate full. Maybe another bolt on the flange face is to indicate full, but no idea which one.

Any thoughts?

You may fill it again, and see how fast is goes down. If you only have to use it for two acres it may last until you finish mowing. I had a seal go out on my woods mower, and put in semi fluid grease until I could get time to change the seal. to change the seal is sometimes a problem, because everything is rusted. Stan

No name that I can tell. It's pretty much all rush and welds.

The back of the gear box looks like it may have been cast with AGCM or something like that. I saw it last night. I pretty much finished using it for the year last night. I may get to taking it apart this winter.

Is there a name on this Mower? It kind of sounds like the one I have. I need to do a seal replacement too. Maybe if no name can you post a picture??

There are part numbers on the seals that the seal and bearing manufactures put on. If there aren't any numbers on them, which I doubt, the parts guy can measure and cross reference the bearing and seals. As far as the gaskets go you might have to cut some new ones and the parts house will have gasket material there too just bring a small piece along or have a good eye and guestimate how thick it is, if it matters. You might even get along with rtv silicone.

One word of caution if you cant get or make new gasket and have to use silicone use the old gasket along with . Removal of same may cause bearing problems .Its dimentionaly nessary . Mark
