Family going out of business sale (divorce) and they told me I could pick out stuff I wanted from the old homestead before they sent stuff off to dump.

Found an old running gear (12' w/ 15" tires) with trees growing thru it. Wood is shot but frame looks good, can anyone tell me about this running gear?

Thanks in advance!

Shep

If they are going to throw it away then take it all.... May be something in there you don't know you need yet OR will provide steel to weld on to something that needs a bit more "design"

LOL

Made different load capacities, Check your wheels and see if they are 5 lug or 6 lug, either would be a standard implement wheel but most were made with 16" wheels for 16" rubber, could have been ordered with either, 2 of them I have laying here (got them out of a junk yard) both have the 16"

Hey ShepFL

I agree with Stan. I inherited a Colby from my Grandfather. He nor I, have ever had a minutes trouble with it. ( excluding flat tires) Wish I had a dollar for every load of hay and 'baccer it's hauled in.

Myron,

Good to see your reply, considering that we Hoosiers and you Kentuckians don't always see eye-to-eye...LOL.

I was ragging on a native Kentuckian one time, and he informed me that "Hoosiers ain't nothin' but Kentuckians on their way to Detroit to build cars". What could I say to that?

I sure am impressed with the farm land along I-24 up toward Paducah, specifically around Ft. Campbell.

Cobey wagons were popular up in Indiana back in the mid-'50s. They were a well built, sturdy wagon that would take a lot of abuse. Always wished we had one, but Dad had mostly cut down horse-drawn wagons. They must have been good, too, as one of them was the last thing uncovered in the weeds when the buildings were torn down 4 or years ago.

Would the name be "Cobey" ? I've seen a few of them around here. Must be an especially good gear because people that have advertised them for sale locally seem to think they're worth their weight in gold.

It is "Cobey" I think they used to be manufactured in Quincy, IL.

A Cobey wagon was considered the Cadillac of all wagons when I was growing up-not far from where Stan grew up.They were advertized to be able to be towed at 60 miles per hour without whipping a bit.A pretty red in color with an orange or yellow decal,I can't remember which.I worked for a neighbor who owned one.

Sounds like one we have, it came under a gravity box we bought this spring for $110. It only has 5 bolt rims, but for how sloppy the tounge is it pulls straight up to 50-60 mph. What color were the rim"s originally? The one we have has 2 JD yellow, 1 red, and a rusty off white on it. I think the decal on ours is yellow. Can"t read the whole thing, but the dust caps on the hubs say "cobey". Have no idea what brand the box is, all I now is it"s green and there *was* a decal in the middle on all sides I think, looks like it was about 10x18" or so. Can only see the slightly darker green paint where the decals used to be.
