MF 424 Drill - Planting Alfalfa

I have a Massey Ferguson 424 End Wheel Drill with which I would like to plant alfalfa, the drill is presently set up for wheat with 'medium' feed wheels installed. The seeding rate chart indicates that the drill should have 'fine' feed wheels installed for alfalfa. The problem is that my local MF dealer tells me that 'fine' feed wheels only fit with the optional Grass Seeder Attachment box, which this drill does not have and that is no longer manufactured. My question is two fold: 1) do I really need the Grass Seed Attachment for the 'fine' feeder wheels (the manual makes no mention of this) -> is the dealer wrong in his assesment of the situation OR 2) Can I seed with the 'medium' feed wheels, possibly by adding some sort of restriction (duct tape perhaps?) in the seed box.

This is the same system as on my Lilliston 9680 no-till drill (aka MF 427), and the same as a Melroe drill (which I think is what the MF 424 really is). Wheels may be the same in the no-tills and regular drills. My Lilliston chart shows fine wheels available for the grain box as well as the small seed box. You can cover the holes up more, which will reduce your rate, however, the medium wheels do not have as many fins cut in and will drop your alfalfa seed in bunches. MM Weaver in Leola, PA is the Massey Ferguson dealer I would talk to about finding parts for anything MF, always have had good service from them. 717-656-2321

I have planted alfalfa with a regular drill by mixing it with some other cheap grain like oats or wheat. Don't fill the box too full. It will settle out from bouncing as you drill, so stop every once in a while and re-mix with your hands.
