Guards on a Ford 501 Mower

The manual says use a hammer to straighten bent guards and others say use a pipe to bend them back. Both of these are awkward and break the guards in addition to being inaccurate. Can I use heat (cherry red and tap until straight) along with a pipe or hammer to get a better job? It seems that this would work well on the mower using a straight edge to line them all up. Another thought is to do them individually (with heat) in a vise using a new one as a reference. What's the best way?

This is a mower that I just bought. I've mowed some with it with good results. Yesterday I tried some hay on a piece that has not been cut this year (it is a mixture of fine grass, weeds, etc and this time of year the dew never really goes away). There was a lot of lodging. Actually, most of the guards are bent and I'm looking for ways to straighten them. I don't think my wife would be impressed if I replaced them all.

I have a bandsaw that uses 1/2" wide blades. I use pieces of wornout blades under the guard as shims, front or back, to line them up. I've never tried heating them and don't think it would be a good idea.

That would be because the original guards were a malable iron which did not break. The cheap ones that we now get are not the same quality of steel. You may get away with heating but not on the original Ford ones as that will mess them up. I have found that if one is bent very much it is easier and cheaper to replace than to worry with it....
