What is your opinions on the best 12' moco hay binds. Are the NH 499 a good machine with few problems. It seems like there is always one in the sale ads.

Thanks

I would suggest that whatever you get has an open drive shaft. I had a NH 489 haybine (9') with enclosed shaft (driveshaft was inside a square steel box running almost the full length of it, of about 4x5 and repairs on the shaft were a real bear.

My current JD 1209 (also a 9') is open shaft and no problems, but should I have problems, access is a piece of cake.

We have a NH 499 pivot tpngue. We have had no trouble with it, now in it's 4 th. season. Got a manual and asked questions and away you go. Nothing like using it to learn how to run it properly. Ours has stub guards on it so it plugs less than the regular guards. I wouldn't buy a end tow.

Case IH 8312 disc mow co center pivot are verygood machines also, used it last season after I put a complete new bar in it. It s a nice machine And I really like the center pivot no more land heading just whirl and go right back down the swath. Hard part is learning to turn with them as when you whirl you bring it to the other side of tractor. really slick thou after you learn them. this machine is for sale yet last I new on the lot. Had a 499 NH earlier running after fixing nice machine in dry condtions has some problems whem wet like all sickle units do. My choice for next season will be a center pivot disc mowco. Running a 1460 JD unit right now and really love it but will be going larger unit next season.

Case was Hesston till FiatAgri bought Hesston in the late 80's. They then were New Idea till the Fiat/New holland/Case/IH merger, now they are New Holland. Because of government rules Fiat had to sell their 1/2 of Hesston (to AGCO) in North America to let merger with New Holland go through.

We used a 14' Heston hydra-swing once when ours (NI 292 9')busted, that was a really nice machine. I can't remember the number, something like 1160. It also comes in a 12' model and is a newer one at that. I could really fly w/ that machine.

the 499 new holland is the best there is as far as haybines go. another option to consider is a disc mower. they will be the same setup as a 499 only instead of sickles they are rotaing discs. a heck of alot less fussier than a sickle head. can be had in 3pt version too.

Heck, I dunno Mark.

The more I fiddle and tinker with these old New Hollands, it finally dawns on me that they aren't much more than a silly sickle mower with a few more chains.

A guy gave me this old 490 and I'm gonna get it running again just out of pure orneriness.

I sure like my 495 tho. That thing is one hay eatin' hog! :>)
