Plow for 1939 JD B

I have a 39 John Deere B that has just been restored and I am wondering what JD plow would match the tractor?

Old is correct. To add a little to his comments, a 1-16" No. 51 or a 2-12" No. 52 would be appropriate. They were lighter weight plows than the 4A and others that were built for the A tractors.

Our '43 B came on steel and with a 1-16" No. 51. After re-powering it with the "Cyclone" engine, putting it on rubber, and adding 5th and 6th gears in about 1947, we moved up to a 2-12" No. 52 plow. I think we might have plowed in 2nd gear, but it's been a long time and my memory is a little fuzzy.

Would you believe I still use that 1935 JD-B to plow once in a while with the 2 bottom 12, not the same one as came with it but another one just like it. By the way its still on the same steel wheels my grandfather had on it in 1940 when he got it.

Yep, I'd believe it. It takes a while to get anything done, though, doesn't it?

We farmed 215 acres in Indiana, with probably 160 of it in crops that required plowing. Until Dad got a new A in 1949, we usually had to borrow a neighbor's tractor with a three-bottom plow to get the job done. Corn planting was hardly ever done before Decoration Day (Memorial Day).

Yep can be a little slow but when your only do say 100 foot square area its not bad and it make the old thing work which I believe is the best thing for them old tractors.

Im from Alabama but live in Missouri. I'm at the lake of the ozarks. The JD-B I have came from oklahoma and was my grandfathers and he got it around 1940.

I believe that would be a 2 bottom 12inch trip plow. Or at least that was what my grandfather had with his 1935 JD-B. I still have the plow and the tractor.
