Need some advice. I have air compressor and hose, just need to buy paint cup sprayer. Don't want to spend several hundred for real professional paint rig; just good quality for painting some old implements and such. What brand is good value for the money? How about the "upside down looking" gravity kind - advantages? How about the ones that say HVLP or some such? advice needed. Thanks

Thanks for all the help. Have looked at Lowes, Home Depot, TSC. Found Campell Hausfeld Model DH6500 at Lowes for about $45, but found DH 7500 Model at toolsdirect dot com for about $59, shich has 2 yr warr and is rated much better that the 6500. Have not checked shipping cost yet, but may buy the DH 7500. Both are the regular siphon type with quick attach cup; the lever rather than screw on. Descriptions of both on campbell hausfeld website. What do you think? Anyone know a superior brand without going to expensive ones?

I would avoid HVLP unless you have a real big air compressor. HVLP is also slower than conventional guns. Very cheap hvlp guns are being targeted to novice painters at places like home depot. These guns do not actually qualify as hvlp given there intended inlet pressure(hvlp inlet pressure should be 10 psi or less). I have a cheap Coleman that I use for priming. It is a knock off of the Binks 7. The Coleman is very low quality, The fluid needle and nozle are not ground nearly precise enough for a fine quality fan. I own a Binks 7 and love it. The Binks 7 is probelly the best convential type gun ever produced. It's been in production for well over 30 years and is still in production. There are some good HVLP guns for about $1000. You can buy a new Binks 7 for between $250-$350. Binks has a newer cheaper conventional gun called the 2001 for $50 or $75 less. As I understand it the body of the 2001 is not all stainless, this does however make the gun lighter. Good quality conventional guns are a lot cheaper than a comparable good quality HVLP gun. If a conventional gun cost less than $100, its only good for primer. If you can get the same quality job with a cheap gun as you can with an expensive gun, Practice some more. There is a lot of skill just in setting a paint gun let alone the technique. I and most other people I know charge $35 to $45/hour to paint. At going rate you can pay for a good conventional gun in a few hours. Why waste $50 on a cheap gun now, when you may want a decent gun for $200 later.

I agree with your ascessment of the #7. Some of the old timers I worked with years ago used them two or three times a week and wouldn't give them up when we switched brands. I used an old Devilbiss MBC for years. It was half worn out when it was issued to me at work, but a rebuild kit ever so often and a new needle every year or so was all the maint. I ever did to it besides cleaning. We sprayed high solids polyurethane, epoxy primers, gelcoats, sprayable sealants, lacquers, enamels and everything in between and it still worked fine when we turned them all into salvage.

I used a $39 Astro (Taiwan knockoff of a Binks Model 7) for years with good results. I recently bought a used Binks #7 off eBay and I hate to say it, but the Astro sprays almost as good.

Regardless of what you spray for paint, spend the $20 on a disposable paint respirator and protect yourself. It will be money well spent.

Check eBay, you may find a decent gun and save a few $$$.

I have the normal HVLP from Harbor Frieght ($49 when it was on sale) - I like it - doesn't seem to use a lot of paint - and I use it outdoors for some old implements like you do -

a friend got his upside down gravity HVLP for I think $39 from Harbor Freight (it is purple)

he thinks it is OK also

ONE THING - all the experts are big on respirators and supplied air - but this is for the paint that has hardeners (isocyanates) added - so since i don't have any respirator stuff - I just paint outside under a tree - and don't use hardeners - it is OK - all depends on what you are after....

The results you get with any paint gun depend more on skill and experience than how much you paid for the gun. Visit your local farm and home store or a store such as Home Depot, Lowe's, Menards, etc. The least expensive Campbell-Hausfeld or similar will do a very good job for you. As you gain experience you may want to move on up to a higher priced gun but there is no point in breaking the bank when starting out. An experienced painter can get good results with a very inexpensive gun, and an inexperienced amateur can get very lousy results from a very high priced gun. Keep it simple.
