Old IH horse-drawn dump rake

I fished an old IH dump rake out of the weeds that was missing the wooden tongue that would have attached it to the horses.

I plan to make this rake into a yard ornament, and would like to add a facsimile of the original tongue.

Anyone know how the original tongue would have looked?

What size lumber should I use? How long would the original tongue have been?

What size is it? Larger size may have had the pole for 2 horses, but smaller size would have had shafts for 1 horse in between. For evener he could be talking a doubletree that you hooked the 2 or more horses to for the pulling OR the neck yoke that caries the front of the toung. a unit that uses shafts used neither a doubletree or neck yoke and if you have the toung type then you need the double tree with 2 singletrees fastened on it and also the neck yoke to make it complete

My Dad's dump rake used a steel tongue. Two 1 1/2 x 1 1/2 angle iron welded to the taper of the original wooden tongue. As I was born in 45 and started rakin about 53 I remember the rake always having this tongue. Maby some one ofmore knowledge will now more about these. Many people used just an trimmed tree about 3 to 5 inches usually of hickory, ash or lockus. Any way, thanks for the memories.

9-10 ft long ash tapering from 6" ot about 3 1/2", with an evener on the rake end. Do yourself a favor and just use a treated 4x4.

find an amish community--i have bought them for $15-25. much easier and cheaper than making them yourself.. im using one on a disc now that is a hedge pole--- and it works.
