I was mowing with a bush hog today and was wondering if anyone knew what a 7 foot 3 point disc mower costs? I thought one of those might be a little handier. We used to have a sickle bar mower but the knives were a pain in the neck.

If you get chance to use a disc mower, I promise that you will never use a sickle bar again.... and probably never try and mash, er sorry,I mean mow hay with a bush hog.

Right Rick - This year has been a pain, hay has been so thick with undergrowth, that it is about impossible to mow with a sickle bar. I've been using a generic bush hog, and am very disappointed with the quality of the cut. Leaves way too much on the ground. There's a guy calling himself Hay Dr. who has been posting on this board. (Think he may be a dealer.) He's showing a DRUM mower that's got my attention. Sure would like to see one in operation, and find one used for a substantial amount off the new price! Might consider that option too.

We have a New Idea and it works great for bluegrass, straw, clover, etc. I would highly recommend it. What kind of tractor are you going to be using?

I have a Vicon CM247 7'10" model that I bought new this spring for a little over $5000, it normally sells for $5900 but I have a friend who is a dealer so I buy a little cheaper. Pulls a little hard on my 42 hp tractor but pulls reeeaaaalllll easy on my 108 hp tractor!

Yes, a 60hp tractor will handle a 7 foot 10 inch Vicon disc mower with ease. I have used one on a MF 165 and 168 with no problems. After we finished with sickle mowers we tried a Howard Haytimer flail mower . Yuck, never again. any uneveness in the ground and it turned into a Howard Rotovator, not only that, if the hay got a days sunshine then it rained on it the result was compost.Disc or drum is the way to go.
