The positive post on the battery of my lawn mower broke off. I naturarly found out when it would not start. I thought I could jump start it and it would run like an automobile. It did not. The machine has a Honda engine. Why will this engine not run from it own electrical generation??

A lot of them will also burn up the alternator if you try to run them that way. They use the battery to help keep it regulated some how.

The alternator may need power to the armature (thru the ignition switch & battery) in order for it to generate current and supply the ignition.

Depending upon the type of alternator, some must have a source of current to excite the alternator.The early alternators used on brand new 1969 and up 4020s had a resistor on the alternators so they could be run without filling and installing the batteries.
