Proper trip bucket loader function

I have a Freeman trip bucket loader installed on my 1953 Ford Golden Jubilee.

It has a bucket that began its existence as a manure bucket with forks. The forks long ago were removed by the previous owner and are MIA.

After resurrecting the loader everything works well. Except the trip bucket doesn't trip. When I pull the lever the bucket release mechanism functions. But, the bucket just sits there. I was assuming that the bucket should dump. Perhaps the bucket should somehow be spring loaded? Could the balance be off due to the missing manure forks?

I've never had a trip bucket loader (or any other loader) until now. Perhaps I'm expecting more. Right now when I move some dirt I have to hop off the tractor and manually flip the bucket to dump it. This greatly lowers the efficiency.

Any help for a loader beginner would be appreciated.

You have it figured out- you need more weight in front of the pivot than behind it. With forks, the empty bucket will trip. Without forks, you could try moving forward and raising slowly as you trip it- it might work, but the only answer is adding some length and weight to the front. Either forks or a dirt plate, or make it into a materials/snow bucket.

I think it is as you guessed, because the forks are missing you don't have the foreward leverage to trip the bucket. A lot of htese have a solid bottom under the forks. Not sure what you have since on most of forks are removed it leaves just a "pusher". you might also want to check pivit point for ease of movement, perhpas it hangs up there.
